Interesting video of a slightly smaller version
Blinking heck that was very very very impressive!

Seen one like this where they ha e the B-29 and Bell X-1 doing a similar thing
There's a massive following for RC stuff over there. (Sorry, off topic)

You tub is full of it. I should start anither anorak RC thread ;)

That's incredible! The in-flight separation is beautiful.

Not scale though - AFAIK no Buran was ever air-launched like that. The US Space Shuttle was though, from a modified Boeing 747. That's been done in miniature with r/c models a number of times.

According to my source, the in-flight separation was a safety feature, coupled with Buran's ability to land autonomously, designed to safe the shuttle in case of a plane trouble.
And you're absolutely right - it was never meant to be launched mid-air.

I remember seeing prototype Enterprise separate from its 747 carrier aircraft on the news. They had 2 of these special SCA aircraft.
I also remember travelling to Stansted back in '83 to see it land there on a visit.
The model engineering that's gone into this one is probably more technologically advanced than the real thing!!;)

I had a piggyback mount on a large (90") r/c model in the '80s ... mostly used to carry gliders up, but I did use it with a powered aircraft as well. The separation took some thought as I didn't want the smaller plane going forward through the prop or backwards into the fin.
