Rusting alloy wheels

Anything from stone chips to badly painted from new, also maybe the wheel have been cleaned with a wheel cleaner, it could be salt, so many reasons.

It only needs to get a little moisture trapped in the hole and the chemical reaction starts.

The Alloys on my SL are fine on the outer side but the paint is blisterng on the inside of the wheels, so in the next few days I will take them off and respray the inside section light grey.

The flip side or inside the tyre? If inside how do you take the tyre out other than asking the tyre dealer?

The flip side I washed it every spring. Forever dirty and impossible to make it squeaky clean. Funny it plastic where the bolt holes are.

I meant the inner section of the wheel, not where the tyres goes

Would you use Wonder Wheel stuff to clean alloy wheels? I didn't know what it is until I realised it just hydrochloric acid not some wonderful stuff as it said when I used it in the W201 alloy wheels.

In my view i would never go near the wheels with that stuff and it is the biggest cause of corrosion in my eyes

Those marks are small, almost to small to warrant a re ferb, but they will not get better. I would hook off the loose bit and float some lacquer into the hole. Dont worry that it will stick out proud, for when it dries it shrinks, if there is still a hole when dry do it again,,after 2 days just polish up with T cut to flatten it. No one can do an invisable repair, but if the hole is sealed it will not get worse

Today I managed to find the time and took a small piece of sandpaper and rubbed of the white stuff. It causes more white powdery stuff and I scratched the vicinity of the alloy wheel and tanished the chrome shine of the alloy wheel. Malcom, how do I restored the tanished vicinity area back to shine? Or I shouldn't have touched it.

With 320-400 dry paper or 600 wet, this will remove the bad lacquer and damage to the wheel that can be polished with T cut, then mask off and spray with a few coats of clear. it will never look perfect but can look much better, the big snag is the top clear is so thin it would take 20 coats to build it up, even if then.

Would it not be better to bite the bullet and use someone like Pristine to completely refurbish the wheel?

Please note this is a question and good luck if you want to try and do your own repair, I just feel that eventually you will end up either getting it refurbished or replaced?

I am not recommending Pristine and no doubt there may well be any number of reputable wheel refurbisher's. My son used the company I suggested and we were both very pleased with the result.

Regards
John

Things have changed alot John, Pristine only operate through agents, and are expensive now, MB have stopped using them as the finish they use does not last long. No one since forums began has come up with any firm that can clear lacquer, with a job that will last 6 months.
As said he can tidy them up, and make them look better for now.
he has the choice in the end to either chrome paint re furb that will last or a new set of wheels.

Pristine did my wheels once and they blistered up with the car never having been in the rain.
