My 2006 220 cdi estate is rusting around both rear arches. It’s spoiling a pretty good car.
I see repair panels for sale on eBay. Do these weld over or up to to fit ?
When these blister is it not sly holes right through?

any advice

Thanks

Without wishing to seem churlish, if you're having to ask this question you should probably be considering getting someone else to do the job. Bodywork takes a certain level of skill and expertise to get a good result.

The question was when the are blistered are they normally holed all the way through?
That would say if I need new parts or if I can repair them at home and if it gets done or not.
I had 55 years in a garage with 5 in a body shop but when you are retired and don’t have the facilities it’s a different story.

Honestly, I am *very* surprised that someone professing that level of expertise would not already know.

In answer your question, they might be. You won't know for certain until you get under the bubbling and see what's left.

Come on Doodle, that's a bit fierce ! o_O
Really?

The OP tells us they have 55 years experience in motor repair but they haven't prodded the rusty areas to assess the extent of the corrosion? 🤔

This is where this is heading . cut it out or walk away. Sorry to say it is disgusting that such 'prestigious' cars as MB should rot away like this , but it is what it is unfortunately.

I guess that you have bubbling paint around the rear arches - I had the same on a w211. Out of curiosity I scraped away the blistering paint and was expecting to find a real rusty mess underneath. Instead I found mostly clean metal with some crazing effect in the metal under the bubbling paint; and no weakness in the metal at all. Disappointing that the paint should be bubbling but surprised at what I found.

That is a cake job, or Es hamon Senor as mentioned in my memory banks of the best body bashers in the business, in short Columbians who worked for me in Caracas.
OK its a sill or rocker panel down & cut out that rusted panel section..
Repair the sub sections where the rust has penetrated or rotted through on the inner wheel arch with sheet metal welding into place.
Media blast the repair area with foundry coking slag to eradicate any rust pockets .
Prime the repair with etching primer & "weld mix primer" for the joints .
Obtain a new or cannobolized "cut" from a wreck and weld in .
Finish with the usual paint refinishing techniques blending in the paint & clear coating.
Apply body schutz or underseal for nice finished job.
That will $1500 per side Senor .

A wire wheel on an angle grinder will soon reveal whether the arches are rusted through. (don't use a grind wheel) May just be pinholes that can be welded up. A dodgy garage may weld patch panels over rusted areas but the repair won't last. The major part of the cost is the paintwork required after repair. (Glad I don't live in the States. Garages in the North West of the UK would get no business if they tried to charge prices quoted by TV above).

Kerabo The only way out of this is to cut out all the rust and weld in a part panel . A specialist in body work is who you need right now for this job . Once done you will feel much better about your love and joy . ..

Could be a receptionist.

Well I don't miss the Sunday morning chorus of the late 1960's & 70's with folk in the council houses around me all engaged in grinding out rust from their Luton or Torino oxidizers.
That unmistaken smell of sanded Bondo Filler & Duplicolour rattle cans to finish the artistic sculpted Brit examples of the "finest" Michela Angelo inspired bodywork jobs.👿
Yes I did it for few quid, sometimes for next to nowt if she was a stunning "Lancashire looker", & so did my mate Bernie in the mid 80's who bought a rot box of a Mini for his missus.
Basically doing the same thing of old in bijou Tarleton West Lancs ,much to the annoyance of the snooty neighbors.

But here in the US as a Pro body/collision shop, you have to have expensive dust extraction & capture systems ,booths & the same with spraying autobody paint & clearcoat.
Then there's the direct labor costs , about double what most Brit body bashers get, ,even the good 'uns .
The the paint itself if red , is expensive like $250 a pint.
So such jobs are expensive to cover overheads and make a profit plus all the time keeping the county air/ water pollution compliance inspector at bay & when he's going to turn up.o_O In short overheads

Now back in the old days in Venezuela and undocumented Columbians I could do a superb job in the cheap for half the money including an MB standard respray for $2000 the lot.
A friend of mine in Mexico will no doubt do what you need from about $1000.

Your problem is getting the car there!

Then all you have to do is wait for the universal Latino body shop expression /plasticando "comments" ) upon presentation of the car after the work is done!
Es como nuevo Senor:p👍👍

Expensive business living in the States. And you dared be unsociable in Tarleton? Surprised the indigenous population didn't get the Chief Constable from Hutton on to you😆

Oh we crossed swords nicely over the phone about Lancashire police causing a speed tarp tailback of traffic hindering some fire trucks attending to a blaze on the canal bank.
I gave him some crap about it, and I could tell he resented it, because I was using American terminology like a 2 alarm fire & officers deputies etc !
Besides I could tell he was not used to receiving complaints American style!!
I got the distinct impression my Gloucester /Zummerzet dialect confused him to thinking it was one of us effing colonials. (which I was, which I am)
Maybe a latter day re-incarnation to him,. Capt John Paul Jones . of the Continental Navy's, the USS Savage attacking Cockermouth all over again! :D

But the best wheeze had to be, me bringing a delegation of Venezuelans including the Ven Ambassador to the Leyland Plant with some staying at the Tickle Trout in Preston and the rest at my house in Tarleton.
Two of the women in the delegation at my house were exceptional Venezuelan" lovelies" who took to roller skating around the village. The local kids were banging on the door with roller skates in hand!!!
We ended a memorable night in the **** & Bottle with the Vens singing their national anthem, full of pints of Thwaites ,steak 'n chips in the street for the locals.:D
Whatta wheeze !
I remember earlier that day the local copper from Hesketh Bank was totally beguiled by these two roller skating Venezuelan women Judy Ceballos y Ninoshka Dominguez. Exoticas Latinas!
I bet he still has memories of it ....... Two Miss Worlds in Tarleton!!

As a footnote its the 200 Anniversary of Venezuelan independence this year from Spain which was determined by their defeat at the Battle of Carabobo being largely influenced by the heavy participation of the British Army/Legion.

Mine are nowhere near as bad as the one in the Picture.
If I prod it I then may have holes and that will look worse than the blisters.
The question was quiet simple. Are the blisters normally holes all the way through?
to fit a repair plate and have it painted is going to cost half the value of the car.
Thanks for the help

The answer is simple. Prod and find out!

There is no "normal", every car will be different and at different stages of decay.
