My automatic gearbox intermittently gets stuck in a gear and the only way to reset it is to stop the engine and restart it. Is this a firmware problem or something more serious?

If the gearbox was serviced regularly I would put my money on its brain. Quite common 700 quid to fix ish

You were right. The computer brain that controls the gearbox had failed which is a common problem with the 722.9 auto gearbox About £680.00 to replace. The gearbox does not need to come out. Problem now fixed. Thanks

Hi guys,

I have a 2006 Mercedes S65 AMG that has covered 40,000 miles and was serviced last year in November at a cost of £3,000. I have now been told that the gearbox had shards inside and is knackered with a repair bill of £6,000 (£3,500 for parts £2,500 for labour) from main dealer Mercedes who have looked after the car all its life. It has only covered 3000 miles since its service.

I have made a complaint to MB Customer Services as the part, as far as i am concerned, is sub standard and should not have failed at such low mileage. Having had a major service towards the end of last year with no indication of any gearbox issues, I see this as a failure on MB part. The request to MB for goodwill by the main dealer was refused and is now under review.

For a car that cost £155,000 new and with such low mileage and supposedly one of the 'most robust gearboxes' its unbelievable that MB have taken such a position. The purpose of this post is to ask if anyone has had any similar issues with Mercedes and how they approached it. Also if anyone can recommend a gearbox specialist that can rebuild the gearbox (should I have to go down that route). I've been told it will cost anywhere between £1200 to £2000 but don't want an amateur to make things worse.

Thanks for reading

Apologies for posting here but it was related to the original post and i can't start a new thread

S65 is a beast of a car. We know for a fact that merc was installing old 5 speed boxes to handle the power, 7g couldn't handle the stress.
Its a hit facing a bill like that but it could be that car was driven hard by previous owner. With torque as these beasts are producing wouldn't be surprised that gear box eaten itself :)
Stay positive, try to fix it a bit cheaper then MB is quoting and enjoy the car.
They are magnificent!!!!!

Hi, the prior owner was a friend that looked after the car very well and was driven mainly by their chauffeur on long trips into Europe. It drove like brand new when I got it and has never had any issues the whole time they had it. Prior to the gearbox issue it had a pinhole in a pump lead in January that cost £1,100 to have fixed! It is a 5 speed as you said that has a torque convertor and drove very smooth. Any recommendations for gearbox specialists in the South?

Its not something I want to ever sell may get the extended warranty after fixing it and just keep it. Don't have need for both the AMG's so will keep whichever one doesn't sell first.

Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow recently rebuilt the gearbox in my 211 - did a top job and total bill was under £2k.

Get in touch with MB AUTO CENTRE DEREHAM IN NORFOLK, THEY KNOW THESE BOXES INSIDE OUT

I doubt MB will contribute anything on a 10 year old car.

The amount MB will charge to sort it out, minus any goodwill, will probably far in excess of a decent inde like the one recommended - which is about the going rate.

I have had my response today from Mercedes Customer Services.

I emailed them and CC'd the CEO of Mercedes and Director of UK Customer Service and they have come back with the following:

No goodwill from MB themselves but the dealership MB Chelsea have offered to subsidise the repair with an £800 contribution so the bill is now £6,600 instead of £7,400!!!!

Complete and utter joke

I have found somebody local who is a MB Specialist who will now fix the car for around £2k. Thanks for the help guys!

Wish I could be anything but disappointed that my prediction is proved totally right!

Car is currently with MB specialist having the gearbox sorted, should be back on the road by end of next week!

Make sure you draw out the £4600 you saved in 20s and have a good bath in it wont you...

Hi guys,

Back with another transmission type issue on my CLK 63 AMG...

Cannot create my own thread due to lack of posts hence posting here.

It has a whirring noise whilst driving and when switching between DRIVE and REVERSE has a few second delay before catching gear. During the delay period the revs go up but the car doesn't move when using the accelerator pedal. Any ideas?

Thank you

No one had any similar experiences then I take it? lol
