These have a reputation for drinking very heavily so I thought I would check it out. I have been using it in Italy for a week or so and have just driven it back to the UK. No passengers but the boot fully laden with Prosecco, red wine and olive oil amongst other things.
Overnight stop in Dijon at which time it was averaging 31.09mpg. I should add that this was a pretty slow run as the weather was dreadful. Never above 110kmh. It also included 200 miles of local trips in Italy. Next day weather was better and cruised at around 120kmh for most of the rest of the trip. Overall average dropped to 28.9mpg.
Not great and I had hoped to do better but its not that bad for a heavy old 6 cylinder.

I think a 500 would return very similar figures in those conditions

My 320 estate averaged 22mpg, whereas my 320 coupe was capable of early 30s, even getting up to 42mpg on one long downhill run.

That is not too bad.

On a quick run Yorks to Salcombe and return 18 months ago I obtained 28. odd in my M104 HFM estate, but I think it was running lean. Not sparing the horses though.

I was a bit disappointed with the figures but they are pretty much as stated in the old brochure. Having said that it ran perfectly. Never missed a beat and I arrived feeling relaxed and ache free.
In the past I have done the trip without an overnight stop but last year after 14 hours on the road my brain started to tell me that a road I knew was straight had bends in it. Realised I am now too old for that sort of journey non stop. Much better this time with a stop over.

Those are exactly the figures I'd expect. You'll only do better by reducing your cruising speed

Nick - what difference does the 5 speed make?
