Out of the blue, when starting the car, there's no D or S in the display at either end of the mileage, and the car is stuck in first or second. When brought to a halt, the stick will only move between D and N, and can only be put in P or reverse having switched off first. The only way I've managed to revert to normal so far is to drive it and flick the ignition off and on again. That works most of the time, but as time (just a few days so far) passes, it's getting harder to knock it back to normal.
Sometimes, when stuck in 2nd, and I try to reboot it, it shifts to 1st and the display comes back showing 3 and S.
There are no other warning lights. Cruise is locked out while the fault is apparent, but ok when back to normal. SBC Hold is not working either, but that predates this problem.
It's a high-miles (278k) hard-worked vehicle that has done me proud for the 7 years I've owned it, and I've done 105,000 of those miles. Another year would be nice.
Might this be a gear selector fault?
Due to the current situation, money is essentially non-existent, so this is going to be a DIY-er, if at all possible.
Hoping the hive mind has heard of this one, and thanks in advance for any help or advice.
Edit: 04 model, 5-speed box.

An MB specific code reader like icarsoft may show fault codes even though there is no eml on the dashboard

Mine had similar issues and it turned out to be the gear selector. Easy DIY replacement.

Excellent, thanks. Part numbers matched and replacement ordered!
There’s a little metal rod thing that connects to the bottom of the gear selector, just make sure you don’t drop it, use some wire to tie it up. As otherwise you’ll need to go underneath to grab it.

Coat hanger at the ready! Can this be done without removing the centre console?
