Hi Fellow Mercedes owners,

I have am having a bit of a nightmare with the rear parking sensors on my fairly recently acquired E320 CDi Estate (a facelift version from December 2006).

I have the usual issue with the two red lights on the displays and sensors not working. Plugging in my iCarsoft i980 OBD fault reader tells me that I have fault code 901B and that there is a problem with A43b9 the inner left rear sensor. It says it's either not connected properly, there's an issue with the wiring or the sensor is faulty. That seemed fairly clear so I purchased a couple of sensors from eBay put one in and tried again. Fault unchanged! Tried the other one and again the fault remained unchanged. Ok I thought - it's possible I have been sent two faulty sensors so I tried them both in place of the rear inner right sensor - no fault for that sensor position showed up so presumably they are OK? Next I put the "faulty" sensor in the rear inner right position hoping the fault would move to that position but yet again the fault remained unchanged at rear inner left! By this time I am getting fed up with grovelling under the car so decided to remove all 4 sensors and the wiring loom so I can investigate more comfortably with everything laid out on the load compartment floor - much much easier but still no joy. I cleaned all the contacts with switch cleaner and "buzzed" the loom through to confirm connectivity which all seemed fine. Maybe it's the connector itself which although it checks out OK with my meter may not be actually connecting properly with the sensor when it's plugged in. So I purchased a second hand loom from an S class (with the same type of connectors) and changed the connector for the rear inner left sensor. Disappointment yet again - fault still unchanged. In desperation I tried another PTS Control unit (A211 545 8932) and pretty much as I expected I am still getting the same fault for the rear inner left. This is getting beyond a joke!

Where to next? Anyone got any suggestions?
The Front sensors seem to work fine providing you haven't selected reverse and thus caused the fault to be actively logged again.

Thoughts I have are:
1) There is a wiring issue somewhere between where the rear bumper loom plugs into another loom socket in the load compartment and the plug that then finally connects the sensors to the PTS control unit - seems unlikely but could just be possible I suppose.
2) The iCarsoft unit is giving me a bum steer on fault location which also seems unlikely but possible.
3) The iCarsoft is also reporting a couple of DTCs that it isn't able to pin down specifically. They are 9027 and 9024. A quick google reveals these are generic codes - the question is are these significant in some way I don't understand
4) I am being an idiot and missed something blindingly obvious somewhere

Any suggestions welcome

Thanks for listening/reading this tale of woe

Hi All,

As it is a nice sunny morning I have just taken another look at the issue with my rear Parktronic sensors.
A further two new sensors have arrived so with all four new sensors installed I consistently get issues showing with the left outer rear sensor.
Codes are:
901d "The sensor is not properly fastened/assembled or there is an obstacle near the sensor"
901c "The sensor is faulty"
plus two generic ones (9024,9028) that are not in my reader'S database.

As before swapping the sensors around does not move the fault as you would expect if it were the actual sensors.
So am I looking at a loom issue given I have already tried a change of control module?

I did wonder if there was an issue related to the front sensors casuing the odd behaviour at the rear but I am pretty sure not because if I let the car "go to sleep" and then engage D before I take off the parking brake the front sensors work fine. Also even if I have been in reverse and got the dreaded red lights indicating a fault I can make the front sensors work by being in D and then clearing the active DTCs using my iCarsoft980. As soon as I do this the front sensors spring into life and work normally.

I feel I'm homing in on something but just not there yet. Any bright ideas anyone?

To be continued...

What you need is realtime information from the sensors.
STAR will give that information and will be worth the money in saved time and effort.

Tony

Thanks for the responses and I'd welcome any suggestions from Richard or Alfie.
Getting some realtime data from STAR does seem like a really good idea if my tired old brain cell doesn't get to the root cause very soon...

Hi
Can anyone shed some light on the parking sensor part numbers as there seem to be numerous part numbers for the same items. I am told I need:-
A000 905 55 04 & A000 905 56 04
other people have quoted other part numbers. Even Mercedes seemed unsure. it is for a 2015 W212 E220 Estate (AMG) front.. Any help would be much appreciated.

Let us know your VIN and the EPC will give us the right number...

Tony

Mick,
According to the EPC:
Sensor part number is A0009055504 for the all the rear and front inner 4.

Front outer 2 is A0009055604.

If you like, I can send you my icarsoft MBII which shows the sensor real time output.
That way, with assistance, you can see that each sensor is working.

Tony

Tony, many thanks, I have ordered the sensors and the loom. Once I get the engine started I will be a lot happier..I'll let you know how I get on over the next week.
Thanks again. Mick

I finally got this problem resolved. Whilst the car was at Wayne Gates for some work on the transmission Terry kindly had a look at this on Star. This showed that the new eBay purchased sensors just weren't up to spec and causing the self test to fail. Terry suggested getting some from one of the reputable companies that specialise in parking sensor systems and spares so I purchased 4 from aetonline at £15.99 each (with free next day delivery). They are Quanan branded with lifetime warranty. A quick light coat of Cubanite Silver and then a few minutes to fit them and job done. At last fully working parking sensors all round. Thanks again to Wayne Gates who are just brilliant. If I could only work out how to get the steering wheel phone buttons to work with my Dension 500S BTW I would have all my little issues cracked.

On the basis that if you don't ask you don't get l raised return requests for the two eBay purchases of duff sensors. The supplier asked for a bit more info, then agreed they were faulty and offered to replace. I pointed out I didn't need more sensors as I had working ones and needed the money back to pay for those. I also pointed out I had little confidence in any they might supply. The upshot is a full refund has now been received. To be honest I was pretty confident that even if the supplier refused PayPal would cough up in this case. Result!
