Hello, silly question inbound.

I'm just inspecting some parts so need to ask a silly question, as I can't remember.

Regarding the front brake caliper carrier bolts. Is the thread in the carrier? I.e, the steering knuckle/casting will have clearance holes, but the threads screw into the carrier and not the casting meaning the bolt head lands on the knuckle casting?

Hope this makes sense!

Thanks.

Threads are in the hub. The carrier is just a through hole.

You're thinking of the disc, that fits to the hub. I'm talking about the caliper carrier which fits to the steering knuckle casting.

Just looking at the trusty Haynes book, I presume yours are the single piston floating type? From what I can see the caliper has a mounting bracket which bolts to the hub carrier. The bracket has 'through' holes and the hub carrier has the threads, as One For The Road suggests. Haynes says the bolts must be replaced and not re-fitted. Hope this helps.

Don't know if we're talking about the same cars.

I couldn't check with anything else until this evening. So from what I've found, steering knuckle is a thu hole. The brake carrier bolt heads land on the flats machined around the holes on the knuckle casting, with the bolt threads screwing into the brake caliper carrier, hence the carrier fitting on the outside face of the knuckle castings.

Definitely a S211. What you call a knuckle I think I call a hub carrier. The caliper itself is attached to a caliper mounting bracket which in turn bolts to the hub carrier, as far as Haynes is concerned. It looks, from the book, that bolts pass through the bracket and screw into the hub carrier (knuckle). How the caliper itself is attached to the mounting bracket is unclear from the book but surely wouldn't be too hard to examine.

Knuckle or hub carrier is fine. But if Haynes is showing the threads in the knuckle/hub carrier then it's from a different car or just for illustration purposes.

Just looked through my Haynes and I can't see a clear illustration. But anyway, we know how it fits now. Thanks for looking though.

The bolts go through the hub carrier (aka steering knuckle) into the calliper mounting bracket, so logically the mounting bracket has the thread. Maybe a photo would help...
