Hello again, 4yrs and 42k miles of C43 ownership under my belt, now I'm looking for what's next...

Originally convinced I'd move into an S205 C63 my focus has now changed to the S213 E63s (now have 2 kids, my man maths tells me I need the E)

I was hoping I could get some advice on the differences/pros & cons of the 2017 model Vs the semi face lifted 2019 model. It just so happens there's a 2017 edition 1 for sale near me too, to add the mix.

The 2019 has a nicer steering wheel but does it have a 'quieter' exhaust?

Is the ride quality better in the 2019 or did this come in the later facelift?

Does the rarity of the edition 1 trump the 2019 upgrades? (I'm viewing this car on Monday fyi)

Members of this forum were a huge help when I bought my C43, I'm turning to your collective wisdom once again.

Thank you for taking the time, and for any advice you can give.

That looks a very reasonable price for an Ed 1 with sub 50k miles.
Whether the Ed1 is worth the extra premium is a matter of opinion.
I've been looking at W213 saloons for over a year and in general feel the Edi is overpriced compared to "ordinary E63s. But that one looks good value.
The ride was improved on the facelift 21 plate model.

The OPF was fitted to the 19 plate onwards so will be quieter than earlier models. If you can get the Vin# check for Option Code 598 on a decoder such as mb.vin : VIN Decoder for Mercedes-Benz. That is the quieter exhaust.
I think I'll end up with an 18/68 plate saloon. Just want the options I prefer to come up.

I can’t really help with the comparison, but have recently treated myself to an S213 E63 2019..not an S as preferred the more comfortable seats and quite unlikely to be “drifting” these days.

I find the “skip” ; the “Ackerman” effect a little off putting, but that is a problem with the all wheel drive of these. as for the rest of the car, a very nice and capable machine…

Perhaps drive both the S213 and S205.

The OPF was fitted to mid 2018 cars too, mine is a 68 plate car and it has them listed on the data card. Way too quiet for my liking but the lack of mufflers helps to some extent.

You’ve done the 43, so you already have some experience of the front end “skip” at slow speed. Do drive the 213 first, as they do have their own quirks. My good friend @Wearsthefoxhat suggests trying the s205 as well. That’s a good call in my book. The boot area is not as generous as the E class, but it is a more sporty drive, and as a smaller and lighter car is a more ‘chuckable’ machine on the twisties. Personally I like a car that is easy to steer with the throttle, so it’s rear wheel drive all the way for me. I appreciate that’s not for everyone though.

As a fellow dad and someone who is guilty of more man maths than probably anyone on this forum, i picked up an s213 e63s today. I particularly like that it didn't have keyless entry (built in anti theft device ! ) but didn't wait to stick a ghost II on it. I didn't like that it didn't have a pano roof, but 25k miles, distronic plus , night pack and a HUD and being a June 2018 model with no OPF was the best I could do with a very sparse selection of estates.

Now I think you're definitely on the right lines with picking an estate. I'm kinda kicking myself for buying 3 AMG saloons in a row , huge mistake. I was on the right track when I bought an s205 c63s in 2018 and should have just held on to that car until now. The E should hopefully get me to bin all the calculators in the house and never do any man math sums ever again 🙄 I'm officially done buying cars.

Comparing the C to the E is a really difficult one because each has their own merits and shortcomings. The E is large and that can be a pain when parking etc. The infotainment is hugely complex for no reason, but yes you get great toys to play with and so i really like that. There's a lot more gizmos in the prefacelift E than the prefacelift C i had. The E is generally a higher grade car though I quite liked the trim of the C I had. The E has a lot more space, the boot is massive , 640 litres in the estate, vs around 500 in the C

The C is more raw and visceral , more of a drivers car IMO. Sounds louder in the cabin, probably louder outside too. it likes to pretend its going to kill you every time you put your foot down. The E is just a silly thing. It puts on speed too fast , it's not even noticeable how fast the speedo picks up speed, very scary. The E is rear biased so other than some mild wrestling with the steering wheel which controls the powered front wheels, drives well, is a firm car. The C in comfort mode is also a bit on the firm side, I dont think either is a better motorway cruiser than the w212.

It was freezing this morning and reversing my 212, or 6 series, or e46 m3 or other rwd cars from my driveway all did a bit of wheel skipping on full lock. The E just does it a lot more. It doesn't bug me at all to be fair but I've only owned the car for around 12 hours

The 68 reg e63s i drove was loud, I believe it had the OPF ( i could hear some pops and bangs), the 18 reg one i bought doesn't and the pops and bangs are very very loud.
The steering wheel on the 68 has all sorts of things on it, it looks cooler than the prefacelift IMO. I think the infotainment screens are quite similar and only the full on facelift gets MBUX.
I wouldn't avoid a good mild facelift version just because of the OPF

You’d be surprised how small the E feels when it’s being chucked about. Going sideways (on purpose) is particularly fun - although not on the lovely set of part-worn P-zeroes I have in 2 degree weather 😂

Sounds like you got the Goldilocks zone I was looking for with no OPF’s. Mine is an October 2018 build, but the pops and bangs are still very much possible, just with more provocation than my C63S needed 👍

To be fair I test drove a particularly stunning post OPF estate and the in cabin sound was very loud under load certainly in the cabin it didn't feel wanting for sound and in sport plus, the pops and bangs were no effort at all to generate. I actually thought the in cabin sound was louder than my prefacelift possibly due to speaker pumped sound ? It sounded very good from the drivers seat

Regarding edition 1 - literally have no interest in paying a premium for one of those.

The market for estates is as plentiful as old mother Hubbard's cupboard at the moment unfortunately. There seem to be plenty of good saloons though but that extra boot space in the estate is worth it IMO

Thank you for all your responses, knew I could rely on you lot 👍

Ride quality:
With the ride quality improvement not coming in till 21' I'll forget about that as they're out of my price range. The ride in my C43 ain't great (crashy over crap surfaces) but I've put with it for this long. Just hoping it's not worse in the E63S.

2017 Vs 2018/19:
Doesn't sound like there's much difference here, yes 18/19 cars will have the OPF but mixed reports on how much that affects the sound. (Swear I've seen a side-by-side on YT somewhere 🤔)
Apart from steering wheel all I can see in my searches is some options are now standard.

S205 🤔
I probably should test drive 1 of these, for the experience if nothing else. I was always planning on getting 1, it's only recently I've switched to the S213. For me it dawned on me that I've got a 4yr old & an 18month old and my wife does drive my car as well, so being a 'sensible' grown up I'm thinking 4matic is the way to go.

Tyre skip:
Tyre skip in my C43 is awful, my Wife thought the car was broken lol
This definitely seems to be an across the board 4matic issue, there are threads on here and MBWorld that suggest best tyres/all weathers/lower pressures to reduce this.

@TrueSpirit as if you've just bought one yesterday! Congratulations, I wish you many many miles of grinning like an idiot 🥳 . For me it absolutely has to be an estate (2x ankle biters).

It looks like there are 2 main potential issues with the W/S213s
1. RMS oil leak
2. Exhaust flap faults
There's are others but these look to be the most expensive.
Could I ask how often people are hearing of these issues in the UK?

The RMS leak issue seems to be most prevalent in the USA, there are posts online about it being something to do with the fuel grades over there gunming up the oil separators. I honestly haven’t heard anyone in the U.K. who’s had it happen. Exhaust flap faults are rare enough, again I tend to see a lot on US forums but not so much here.

Reference ride quality, my old C63S whilst fun was extremely hard (even in comfort mode) but because of all round air on the E63, its night and day different - I wouldn’t let that put you off.

Ultimately, it’s not designed to be cosseting, it’s a drivers car right? 😀

It doesn’t just affect 4matic, nor Mercedes, it’s a “thing”for many cars with wide, very low profile, stiff side-walled ultra high performance summer tyres in winter, and gets worse as the tyre ages and the tread blocks wear.

I have a customer with a 2017 E63 with 93,000 miles, rms leak. It’s oil seperator related. Car had impeccable dealer service history before it came to me. Leak was already evident first time I saw it. It’s booked in to be sorted. Going to be new seal and 2 seperators. Not going to be cheap I suspect

How many RMS failures on W213’s have you seen?

All the failures I’ve read about in the US seem to happen at much lower mileages (I saw one as low as 21k!) - so it surely adds some credence to the fuel theory…..

That edition 1 has been reserved, might have to go for a little cry 😢
