Could these be related?

Was told today that on the maifold the link between the motor and valves has broke and so they are stuck in the open position causing the rattling/ticking noise and the excessive smoke on harsh acceleration.

Originally thought it was a leaky injector seal but all are fine...

What else could be causeing the ticking (1500 - 2000rpm) and the smoke...?

Thanks guys, Dan

You mention a motor on your manifold. Is this the inlet port shut off motor linkage? This could cause smoke but lack of power too. Start with that if it is broken. Be aware that the straight six 320cdi engines all have a characteristic ticking noise audible when driving light throttle with the windows down. If it is a light ticking noise this is a normal combustion noise. Black smoke on these models not common apart from possible exhaust gas recirculation valve sticking open, likely on higher mileage vehicle. I have also seen a faulty rail pressure sensor or air mass sensor cause smoke. Hope this helps a little.

.
Maybe some injector is broken, or leaks.
-> injector test.
