S320 cdi Wiper stalk

I have just purchased an S320 cdi on a51 plate and found the wiper stalk on the steering wheel does not work, the indicators work but the wiper function and the washer when pressed is not operating.

Any thoughts on the matter or has anyone come across a similar problem?

To be sure it's the stalk it needs to be plugged in. There are so many things that could cause it.

It seems the last owner has put a separate knob to switch the wipers on and off. not sure why. But the knob only runs at one speed so in real heavy rain I will struggle.

Looked in the fuse box and found a temporary wire. looks like its been bypassed for some reason
