I've been looking at a Oct 2013 S350 BlueEfficiencyL (petrol) - does anybody know if this is the end of the W221 line and any good/bad points to watch out for?

And, probably a dumb question, does anyone have information on the internal dimensions of the boot space?

Thanks

So far, the oldest W222 I've seen is November 2013 and the newest W221 I've seen is October 2013.

It's very close but I suspect the last of the W221 - particularly if the price is good!

Have you got pictures - it's pretty easy to Google both models and spot the difference from the headlights.

On the newer ones, the DRLs run across the top of the headlights. Lower down on the W221.

I don't have figures but your W212 trunk is bigger than the W221 (or the W222) trunk, even without making use of folding rear seats (that are not available on the 221 or 222).

The W222 trunk space depends on options, rear seat and audio etc.

Thanks,
car i've seen is definitely a 221, having checked out the front lights as suggested. But 333k with 22k miles is tempting for a magic carpet ride etc. My alternative is an E63 estate to replace my E350CDi estate (both W212). Talk about one extreme to the other - rocket ship with boot space or total comfort and no multi-storey parking.

You could probably buy a few new ones for that - or at least a couple of S65s! :D

I would try them both if I were you - see which you prefer.

Oops! I'm glad you noticed the deliberate error, I was thinking of going for one in each colour :thumb:

Going to look at and E63 estate tomorrow, see whether I frighten myself.

W221 vs S212

Tough one. I switched to a V8 E500 S211 in 2015 for its luggage and bike carrying capabilities. And I've just bought a V8 W221 to replace it because I love the luxury ride of the W221 ( always grin when the S class turns up as an Airport transfer) and I only ever use the tailgate to load bikes half a dozen trips a year.

Doesn't the issue comes down to what will you ACTUALLY benefit from?

The E63 Estate has street cred for sure, but will you ever use the power? I live in roughly the same area as you, and I have never felt that I needed anywhere near 500bhp.

I used to have a new E55, back in the day, and I always felt that I had to drive it on tippytoes - so much so that it didn't feel like driving - and this was the E55 not the E55K. (Although TBH, back then most of my driving was in Central London - not any more)

Whereas the W221 delivers luxury and quality in spades. If you cope with the jokes about the Chauffeur's hat?

Does size matter? It depends where you're parking it. Does it fit in your garage? If it's on the street in London everyday, then maybe. Elsewhere: not so much? An S500L W221 is fine in modern multi-storey's, thanks to the popularity of SUV's, they've just got bigger.

The magazines, like Car and Driver, will argue that the S212 is a better "driver's car" than the W221, but is your taste and driving, the same as a young Journo who still has car posters on his bedroom wall?

Another question is how can you consider an E63 against an S350L ? Shouldn't you be comparing engines which are a bit closer together?

No disrespect to any choice - it's just a matter of mapping the priorities, and actually driving the things in real life, on roads you actually use, to do things you actually want to do.

Just some thoughts from someone who's just been through the same choice process.

I'm surprised you think the W221 is much different. I don't think the ride in my previous E55K was any different to the ride in my current 216 CL (which means the E55K is very good rather than the CL being poor - I have recently had to drive a 17 year old A class which confirms this to me)!

It's never need though - it's always want. No one needs any more than is needed to power the car efficiently with all the likely load it will carry. :D

E Class AMG doesn't escape the taxi cab jibes. Ask me how I know... :D

I agree with just about everything here - real issue is moving away from diesel before stupid policies suck out all residual value on E350, which realistically has all the performance I need. Not much choice in petrol engines, so whatever catches my eye and I may decide to do nothing for a while longer.

I had an S350 on loan some months ago and was amazed by the ride and performance, but I also tend to do an annual trip to Portugal when the load capacity of the estate is perfect.

As you say, tough choice..
