I replaced the battery in my 2000 S500 today, but accidentally disconnected the negative terminal after about 20 seconds. When I connect the battery now, the wipers go on, lights come on (neither of which I can switch off) and I cannot start the car - in fact I can't do anything, as nothing responds.

    Help!

Returned to it this morning, reconnected, and it started 1st time. Now have ABS, BAS and ESP error messages, radio does not come on and engine running on about half the power. Brilliant.

That's the last time I touch ANYTHING on this car.

Move the steering from one side to the other to get rid of the abs lights.

Restarting should loose the limp mode.

Thanks for your advice, but that didn't clear the error messages. I have also followed a separate link to reset the ECU, but that didn't work either.

I suppose at least it now runs, which is better than where I started. Time to bite the bullet and take it to a dealer ....:wallbash:

Yes, I took it for a 5 mile run. It does not have full power and idles very rough.

What happens if you disconnect it and try going around the block again?

I disconnect the battery from my S500 as it has a habit of flattening batteries, every time I reconnect it I have to turn the steering from lock to lock to clear the esp/bas/abs lights and I'm good to go again.

W220s can be hard work when it comes to electrical faults...

When i disconnect the Battery on my S600 the ESP and ABC warnings come on every time.
If I drive for 10 - 15 minutes they usually clear, sometimes they clear by the end of the road.
If you want\ to reset the steering center sensor then move the wheel from lock to lock, but only do this on flat ground!
    Never had the BAS warning.
