This is my layman's view on the subject:

Simplicity. S and S-coupe are easier to comprehend and remember than myriads of confusing abbreviations that are getting old in the tooth (CL, CLK, CLS, CLA).

Besides, new name should give the new coupe better exposure (the whole new model in Mercedes lineup!) and potentially increase sales.
