Same car, different badge

A friend of mine has just bought a 4 door Audi A5 2.0 Tdi. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the A5 based on the A4- which is a 4 door? It's as though it has come full circle.
I know that most car manufacturers do this, but, besides the A5 badge, there seems to be no great difference, yet he has paid more for the A5 than he would have done with the A4? :doh:
I know Mercedes do this with the CLK/E/CLS etc but I think that they do look different, or is this what we should expect from all manufacturers in the future?:dk:

A5 is longer then A4 and initialy A5 was 2door but they start making 4door version as well.

There is quite significant difference between A4 and A5. Check google pics if you not sure.

looked into buying these, yep they look different but room inside is very similar and most components are shared inc the floor pan from memory

I'm sure the pricing of cars is a complex business, but in part it will include, R&D, materials, tooling, factory, labour, transport, currency, marketing.

So whilst the A5 is based on the A4 there were till additional development costs, but they will be making fewer A5s than A4s, so will need to recoup their investment costs quicker.

Plus anyone other excuse Audi may wish to quote.

I wonder how closely related the A5 is to the Passat CC? :)

First of all you need to distinguish between the A5 coupe and the 5door A5 Sportback. The big difference between the A5[SB] and the a4 is that the A5 is a hatchback! If your mate bought a sportback that's probably your answer.

The A5 COUPE [3 DOOR] was the first VAG car with the B8 platform to hit the streets.
In B8 platform vehicles the longitudinally-mounted engine and transmission are mounted further rearwards than in previous Volkswagen Group platforms, (shifting the centre of mass of the major mechanical components (engine and transmission) behind the front axle), and allowing an increase in the wheelbase without lengthening the car's overall exterior dimensions. Less front overhang means MLB-based models will have a more even front:rear weight distribution.

Current MLB-based models

* Audi A4 (B8) (Typ 8K)
* Audi A5 (Typ 8T)
* Audi Q5
* Audi A8

Future MLB-based models

* Audi A6
* Audi A7
* Bentley Continental

:doh: Forgot to say Sportback!
I have done a bit more research in to the matter (Audis website) and I really can't see that much difference besides the price? I'll rephrase that- I can't see the value in the A5 as opposed to the A4. Why not just bring out an A4 hatchback? Or is that too simple?:dk:

skoda,audi,vw,seat, its all the same........crap

I thought they did already...the A3? :dk:

I own an A4, great cars but I must admit the line between some of the models is very blurred!

I find it almost impossible to tell the difference between their convertibles.

A3, A4 & A5 all have a convertible variation.

See for yourself.....

Think if you want a 5 door A4 AUDI want you buy an estate.;) There is no estate version of the A5 so I guess maybe the Sportback fills that niche.

The A 4 estates are pricier than the saloons and taking into account the various engine/trim permutations there is a considerable overlap with the A5 sportback in the price range. I have found the " upmarket"A5 to have a slightly better trim inside than the A4 but other wise they share lots from the parts bin. In the end I guess its down to style with A5 buyers looking for that slightly more sporty look-- and prepared to pay for it!

p.s. tpwuk there is no current A4 convertible- it was replaced by the A5 convertible-- totally baffling as you say.:confused:

pps:--- I think one answer to the why would they do that question ? Is to look at the rival manufacturers BMW and Mercedes. If any of them bring out a new niche model 9 times out of 10 the others follow with their version.

Good example would be AUDI's A4- A5 cabriolet mirrored by Mercedes CLK convertible to E CLASS cabriolet = slight upscaling of both models?? :dk:

Yeah I know. It's just proves certain derivitives of the A4 & A5 are the same car just with a different badge. No doubt the A5 convertible is more expensive than the A4 convertible ever was.

But the same probably applies to the CLK and new E-Class coupe/convertibles. Re-badge it and charge an extra few grand! Ker-ching!!!

A friend of mine also has the A5 4 door. Nice car but...he changed from a CLS 320CDI, and has gone for the 2.0 tdi Audi!!!
