Hey all,

Not posted in an age, but wanted to share this as I really don't know how it can happen... (though I have a revelation mid-way through typing this lol).

My car is from 2012 and stopped getting the regular Sat Nav updates in 2015, when the free servicing ran out. I then started using an independent specialist, then a local garage for all servicing. Neither of these offered Sat Nav updates.

There's a route I used to take fairly often that had a "new" roundabout (for a new estate that was built) that was not present on my Sat Nav. Car would freak for a moment (off road!) as I navigated it - it was off-centre to where the road used to go - before getting back on track. I travelled this road a LOT before the new roundabout and estate, and have done it a number of times since. I'm used to the car simply not knowing about this new roundabout - and the other new ones taking you to the new housing estate - and just showing a straight road with a field next to it.

Today, I'm driving out that way again to meet some friends, first time in a couple of years. I know from Google maps the quickest route now is to take a right at this new roundabout, then navigate some of the new roads around this estate to get to my destination. As I know this part of the route, I don't use my Sat Nav, but have the map up. My plan being to use the Sat Nav once I'm closer - back on older roads - to navigate the final couple of miles.

Imagine my surprise when I'm approaching that "new" roundabout, previously totally unknown to my car, and there it is, showing correctly on the map! I enable the route to my friends and it perfectly takes me right at this roundabout, and through several others that simply were NOT on the map previously.

Now, it clearly looks like my Sat Nav's map has been updated. Details are there that never have been before. However, I've not had it updated! The only possible explanation (I just thought of this while typing) was that perhaps the Main Dealer updated it when my car had to go in for an Airbag recall last year. There's no mention of them doing anything else, just the airbag replaced (as per the recall) and a general road-worthiness inspection. Considering updating Sat Nav maps is a paid service with Mercedes, I'd be shocked if they did update it for free.

Has anyone else had their Sat Nav updated while there car was in for something else? The recall was of course free... Sat Nav updates are not. I was quoted several hundred pounds when I enquired a few years back.

Anyway, I suspect it must have been updated when the car was in for the Airbag recall. If so, that's a nice bonus!

Note: when the car was new, and I had the free servicing, the dealer was very lax about Sat Nav updates. Indeed, they simply never bothered, even though it was a listed item. It was only on my last ever service with them, that I pointed out they'd NOT done it, despite billing for it on prior services. A bit dodgy. That's why I know when my Sat Nav was last updated by that dealer.

I am assuming your C350 CDI is a W204 facelift? If so, does it have the Audio20 infotainment system with the optional Becker Map Pilot navigation processor in the glove compartment, or COMAND NTG4.5 system with the built-in navigation and the maps on the internal HDD?

It has the COMAND NTG 4.5, so I'm assuming MB must have updated it from CD/DVD?

Sounds spooky to me with the same vintage C350 (although petrol, not diesel).

I would be very surprised if your dealer updated the map foc when it was in for the airbag recall. But who knows. I paid for the most recent COMAND NTG4 update (2023), having bought it on eBay.

You can check which version you have, although I can’t remember exactly how. I think you go to navi at the top left of the screen then select version.

It has the COMAND NTG 4.5, so I'm assuming MB must have updated it from CD/DVD?

It can be updated from DVD, SD-Card, or USB drive. The latter is the fastest and most commonly-used option.

The dealer in question was just the closet one to me currently, never been there before so they didn't know the car so to speak. Quite a bonus if it was them, and this is the only explanation I can think of. It's not been to a main dealer since 2015, and an independent isn't any more likely to give me a free upgrade.

Also, when my car did have it's one and only Sat Nav map update - after MB couldn't be bothered for the first three years - they said it took several HOURS to complete. I wasn't away from my car that long when the Airbag was done, plus they also did that inspection - which they videoed and sent to me. NO mention at all of the Sat Nav.

I wonder if they did any other Software updates? There WAS one on the list which I explicitly forbade them from doing as it would have de-tuned the car (which is and was running great) I assume it was some emissions thing, I knew about it at the time, but haven't thought about it since.

Free stuff from a Mercedes Dealer just doesn't sound right to me lol.

Well go on then, we're all in suspense here, go out to the car and check the version of the maps on COMAND.....

The latest version for NTG4.5 is v20.0, BTW:

Will do that and post back, not had chance since returning home last night. I assume finding that information is straight-forward enough?

Right, just checked and the Map version is showing as 2014/15 v11 - exactly what I'd expect based on the last time I know it was updated.

So, if my map version is still "old" why is this roundabout (and associated housing estate and adjoining roads) now clearly present, when it wasn't previously. I've done this trip multiple times since that 2014/2015 update, and those features were never shown on the map. Now they are.

You know, I thought that MB must have updated something as my map is now current for that area, it was the only logical explanation. However, map is old, yet content has changed. I would like to get the map updated, it's still a good nav system, but MB charge a lot for what is a free update on other systems.

Just updated the maps in my son's W204. Went from 2010/11 to 2023. Easy enough to do, but did take quite along time.

May I ask how much it cost? Sat Nav is so useful when I need it, but I so rarely do. Hence the value of it to me is perhaps less than to some others.

Send me a PM and I'll send details.

I made this guy an offer of £76 and he accepted. He seems genuine and it was easy to install.

I have used this same Chap for map updates also, he suggested to have engine running whilst performing update, I actually kept the battery connected to CTEK charger during update, without engine running.
£70 for mine .;)

You can also upload the maps while driving the car as you normally would (but you will obviously not be able to use the navigation while the maps are being updated). And don't worry if your journey isn't long enough (the maps upload takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete), if you turn off the engine the update process will be suspended and then on your next journey it will resume fron where it stopped, and so on until completed.

Hi , had my Command up dated 10 months ago and I think the system has been updated !

On the radio section a music sign has appeared and the base middle and treble setting are now set at zero.

Mrs Boyband has complained to me that the audio sounded flat.

Thanks. I suppose that for now I'm only concerned that it's all working fine and that the piracy hasn't been detected during servicing by my MB dealership.
