Satellite Navigation Pre Wire (Optional Maps Module Required)

Just browsing used Mercedes, I've noticed a number of cars appear to have built in sat nav but then have - Satellite Navigation Pre Wire (Optional Maps Module Required)
So without the Optional Maps Module, there is no Sat Nav ?
Where are these modules obtained from ?
What do they cost ?
Are they easy to install
Do they need updating ?
Is it a DVD ?
Can they be removed from the car by the previous owner or at auction etc ?

As you can gather, I've not the foggiest on this ! haha So any info greatly appreciated

I think that will be for Becker map pilot - a little box that you plug in. I have it in my pre facelift 2013 w212. It is not a patch on command that I had on my previous w204. I tend to use the Waze app instead these days. If it was me buying I would hold out for a car with command.
