I saw an A5 3.0tdi on the road the other day, very pretty car and a useful bit of economy whilst still being fairly rapid. wouldn't be unhappy with one I suspect. would need to option it up though, might might add a few quid to the price.
for the S5 and the 3l tdi A5 no, it's manual only, but the 3l petrol and the 2.7l diesel can have multitronic CVT boxes I believe...
I would imagine that auto's will appear in due course for the others. it's not like audi don't have powerful auto boxes, the s6, rs6 and s8 are auto only as I recall.
I test drove both the S5 and the 3.0 TDi before I bought the SL500 and whilst I really liked the cars they are not head turners in my opinion. They are too subtle lol.
The torque provided by the diesel was amazing and around town was far more drivable than the 4.2. It delivers its power far lower down the rev range and the gear changes could be made far smoother. But I struggle with a manual 3.0 ltr deisel for £40+k. So it would have to be the 4.2. But its harse to drive. Amazing fun and fast but certainly no cruiser. Its more like my M3 and demands to be driven. Both are beautifully put together and the interior is lush. Particularly the seats in the S5. But they just couldnt pull my heart away from an SL.
Rear windows that are static, a harse manual gearbox, bland (by comparison) styling and a hit on depreciation just are too big a pills to swallow.
My advice to you guys that look on with envy at them is smile wider when you start your Mercs! You made the right choice. At least until the synrco 2 gear auto box is released and put in a hard top convertible!
