Hi been trying to find a scanner/fault code reader for my vans both of which have 14 pin round diagnostic plugs.... today had a phone call which sent me to this page...
CARSOFT Mercedes V12 System - Single Brand
and said this is what you need + serial port computer...

has anyone had experience of this scanner on 1999 312d and 2001 311cdi with 14 pin round plugs?... my reading seems to say that the 1999 sprinter uses different "language" to after 2000

It is a bit expensive but if it is the cheapest possible route to sorting fault codes and warning lights and works then OK

doing searches around Carsoft Mercedes v12 s I ended on ebay with
MB MERCEDES BENZ CARSOFT 7.4 DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE MULTIPLEXER READ ECU FAULTS | eBay
which is cheaper and seems to be similar scanner

and with
New MB 7.4 Multiplexer Read Erase All Fault Codes Read Ecu Information for Benz | eBay
which is chinese version and even cheaper

has anyone had experience of any of the above? thanks Mark

Hi,
Some long time ago, I bought a simple ELM Bluetooth plug in OB2 tester along with a round plug adapter for my 1997 312 Sprinter, it was very cheap from China. I think I got it off of Ali Baba. However I have never yet had to use it, as the van is just so reliable, not that I use the van much these days anyway. So, therefore cannot comment on its usefulness. Early Sprinters as you know did not have an OB2 port just the round pin port.
I have an Icarsoft MB2 which supposedly can be used on a 1997 Sprinter van, perhaps using the round plug adapter. I am not able to test this for you as I do not have the van here, perhaps an enquiry to ICARSOFT would confim this.
I would think at the very least you will need a Round Pin port adapter and for the few quid a bluetooth ELM device is, it may be a starting point for you, depending of course, what faults you wish to test. Software, an App, is easily available, but I do not have an android nor IOS phone, and now I remember, that was another problem using the ELM device with having an old phone running Linux and no software for it!

Hi I have an ELM bluetooth using 16 to 14 pin converter it works in a limited way on my UK version 2001 sprinter 311cdi ( brings up engine revs, boost etc. but says no fault codes stored..which might just mean I have no fault codes stored) but doesn't work on 1999 312d at all (which might be fault with socket)

Hi thanks for interest .. have read and posted a bit in Sprinter forum following all avenues towards bewilderment.

ps. how do you get your list of vehicles on the bottom of your post?

Hi,
Your signature is what you need to access and populate.
So, click on your profile name at the top of the page, then second down is signature, fill that bit with what ever takes your fancy.

Hi,
Would it not be prudent to make sure the diagnostic port on your 1999 312 is working properly before spending £238??

Steve

If I knew how to check UK pre 2000 14 pin diagnostic port then i would... I.m hopng that scanner will tell me how to fix things as blind without it... I have wondered if powerfeed to diag socketnot there as elm 327 (but elm is obd11) didn't have power light come on and when I fitted DAB radio I had to run power feed from battery as there is no power to the original cd player lead... I have copy of WIS but it doesn't fully bring up my vehicle details... or rather it brings up the details but also information that doesn't correspond with my van...
A lot of reading and queries on internet leaves me little wiser about the 14 pin diagnostic socket on 1999 sprinter read about earlier flash blink diagnostics and 38 pin and 16 pin and 14 pin on 2000+ sprinters but hardly any thing more than just mention that UK pre 2000 14 pin exists

I have ABS light on but can't find where to test the wheel sensors without cutting wires and don't want to cut wires until scanner been usd...

I have engine control fault that causes lots of smoke (fairly certain that it not caused by old fashioned mechanical problem) which I can affect by unpluging the injector advance connector on the top of the engine (goes to BOTTOM of injector pump) and can also affect/improve by connecting vacuum directly to the turbo controller ( using boost/vacuum guage have dicovered that there is not vacuum build up past the 4 branch connector behind heater"box").... It has been suggested that the EGRvalve might be problem (vacuum controlled) .... also problem rear diff lock (vacuum activation of hydraulics)... I have discovered that there may be problem with electrically controlled vacuum relay for turbo...

and this---just work backwards with the adapter in place

thanks for info
putting it together what I can get of WIS
(from your link) These are the connections for your 14 pin diagnostic connector on 312D with 602 motor.
Pins
1.Brown
2.Black /Blue with violet
3.red /green

5.Blue/black
8.Blue /green
12.Blue /red with white
13.Blue /black
14.Blue /White

WITH... WIS doc number... Pe54.22-d-2000-99b wiring diagram of connector/data link socket

then I now know what should be connected to each pin but can only test
pin1 = earth
pin2 = live from battery through fuse
pin3 = live from ignition

all the rest come from modules etc. which require diagnostic scanner to acces if I've understood WIS wiring diagram so still need tester to test most of socket but will get volmeter on pins 1,2,3

Still looking for pin out digram for 1999 312d 14 pin to save dismantling to see wire colors

Hi,
Just looking back through the thread and trying to circumvent the scanner issue. I seem to remember reading that the old Sprinters even used a different language to talk to diagnostic ports. I would agree with your past comments that there is relative little info on these old Sprinters. I have searched as much as i can and seem to find nothing. I rather think the 90's were not the "fix it with a diagnostic" as so many vehicles are today. Faults were cured then by techs that knew their trade. In their day these were super reliable and easy capable of 500,000 miles.
Your ABS problem ....

and lots of others on youtube to test wheel sensors to save you cutting wires.
Smokey engine ... possibly overfuelling ? , or lack of boost may be sticking vanes in the turbo, have you put a tin of injector cleaner through it ? ( I am no expert on this ) but the 903 engine is very basic compared to the later cdi engines. I would perhaps suggest a good diesel tech can probably advise you on that. I have used a Specialist diesel place near Buckingham in the past---too far for you-- but he was "old school " and very helpful when i had a blowing injector and remarked how simple these were to work on. Perhaps you can find a Diesel tech near you that can help ?
As an aside ... I see you have a 507....I had a 508 for 13 years, from about 1989, which i replaced with the Sprinter in 2003. I only replaced it because it was getting rotten underneath and wouldn't get through another plating. Also the 3 month vehicle inspections were getting expensive and it was just coming up for another Tacho test as well. Excellent van though, as has been the Sprinter. I put a gearbox/ clutch in it when I bought it as 5th was screaming, uprated the rear springs, and apart from a blowing injector and routine servicing, that is all it has needed since 2003.

Steve

Thanks for your time Toolman.... Agree first test for ABS is testing wheel sensors... don't want to cut the wires but may have to because have been unable to find out where they disconnect... even found one w/shop manual saying to cut the wires to replace sensors.. have cleaned tone rings and all sensors are around about same distance from tone rings

as regards smokeyness ... I'm begining to think that at least part of the problem is a vaccuum leak in non engine part of the vacuum system (I also have problem with rear dif lock which is electrical to vacuum to hydraulic) The vehicle is sorned so not legal on road until I can get ABS and smoke issue sorted... have not been able to find nearby diagnostic suitable for pre 2000 14 pin.. Or mechanic who seems interested in "problem" vehicle... I know I have problem with vacuum sytem and am waiting for a dry day so I can start dismantling to get to and testing vac systems... I also suspect I may have problem with the remote electric vacuum controller for the turbo charger but don.t know how to test as don't know if it controlled with PWM or varying voltage

Here's post I put in MBWorld.org couple days back sort of saying where I've got to with it...

Hi I have 1999 sprinter 312d 4x4 UK specification WDB9034612P933743 which I am restoring ( work since November can be seen at.. https://www.facebook.com/Sprinter-4x...2569177218393/ )
I am 1970's mechanic ie. understand nuts n bolts n hammers, struggling to understand engine management especially on 1999 312d with 14 pin diagnostic socket and pre OBD11 (at least I think so).
I have a not very accurate copy of WIS (when I put in vin number it says not reckognised) WIS sometimes is helpful but not for present problem
I am trying to find out why sometimes the vehicle does James Bond type smoke screen and then other times runs OK.
I do NOT think it is a mechanical (ie. head gasket, rings etc,) problem fairly certain it is engine managment

engine is smoke free at tickover

When in smoking mode and revved the engine surges and vast amount of smoke come out.... when i disconnect the grey "injection advance connector" on the top of the engine (next to the black lead injector/needle lift connector, resistance on lead injector 120ohms) then the engine stops producing smoke and smooths out.

When I connect the vauum pipe directly to the vacuum controller for the turbo charger the white smoke stops.....My Problem is WIS.... according to my copy WIS my turbo charger has vacuum controller that is only connected to turbo charger whereas MY engine has vauum contol unit mounted down behind lower heat shielding just under inlet pipe from air filter and the control unit has brown and green wire which as best I can connect volt meter has 6.7 v. ignition on.... I don't know if there is a problem with this unit (or voltage) but if it in vacuum circuit then sometimes I have smoke....

Is there a way of testing this unit?

Pictures are at address above

The vacuum pipe which goes to this turbo contol unit is connected to the first T connector of off the white pipe coming of the vacuum pump and going to the Brake servo .... Just after it T's off it goes through filter and splits in 2 one of which has grey stripe and goes to head light adjust.. the other pipe the plain brown does not seem to hold vacuum... connecting vac guage in I get reading of 35"hg on previous part of system but when the brown pipe going behind the heater "box" is connected then vacuum is lost...... there are 4 pipes splitting of behind the heater box one of which goes to turbo charger control...identifying the others difficult without removing heater "box"
.
Can anyone with good WIS bring up document number that I could use in my WIS for (or post diagram/info)
1. engine management etc. vacuum diagram that identifies what the various vacuum pipes sre for
2. test procedure for remote vauum controller for turbocharger

any suggestions or help appreciated. Mark

Have found one cure for smokey 312d
Have discovered today that on UK. T1n' both 1999 312d and 2001 311cdi there is a vacuum controller on N/S of heater air inlet box that is actuated when the heater control knob is pushed in so red light comes on... Beyond this controller on 312d is bit that is leaking vacuum.... when
the red light on heater control is OFF then my turbo boosts... then red light is ON then NO turbo boost and smokes
Had noticed previously that on my 311cdi when i pushed in this knob so red light came on then I lost power... (felt like limp mode)... Today after finding problem with 312d went and had a look at vac controller on heater air box on 311cdi and discovered pipe connecting controller to servo at back of heater box missing

Friend of mine also has loss of power when this heater control pushed in (red light on)

So ONE of the causes of LOSS OF POWER AND/OR SMOKE is lack of vacuum to cause turbo to boost... cause in my case on 2 vehicles is vacuum control of something on heater unit ... EASY TEMPORARY FIX PULL OF PIPE AND BLOCK (will have another go if it stops raining)

SORTED bought Delphi bluetooth diagnostic kit for all vehicles to 2014 cost £200 on ebay uk... diagnosed ABS problem on 1999 pre OBD2 14 pin round socket also works on 20001 311cdi with later protocol . Now feel more confident of being able to fix both. has guided diagnostics, lists pinout diagrams and resistances/voltages which check out as correct.
complete kit includes bluetooth diagnostic scanner with 16 pin standard obd2 plug plus leads for many vehicles including 14 pin round as used in early sprinters and linx tablet (windows os). promises backup if needed
Have seen similar looking Delphi bluetooth scanners on Ebay for £50ish with software cd but no leads or computer and no backup

Hi.
Marktinkerman could you give the exact model of this device, please. If you could join the link it would be great.
Regards, Matt
