In George Frasers last night until 9pm with a gearbox problem..
anyway, it turns out that a known 'issue' with the electronic 'boxes is that the seal from the box tot he cable that goes to its brain (located in the slightly coffin shaped box nearest the windscreen, LHS) can sometimes fail - this allows oil to be pressurised up the wires and into the brain, killing it.
If you have an electronic box and are fiddling around under the bonnet anyway, its worth checking.
In the S class, the brain is the box that runs left right (as opposed to forwards backwards) with two equal sized large black plugs on the top. remove the plugs on this unit and look for oil in the sockets.
Mine was OK - but this other guys S class (280 i think) 1997 had 1/4 of a pint in it - and was fecked...
dont know how bad the fix is - new seal obv - but dont know how much of a mission it is.
Symptoms are 'gearbox goes funny' and / or total loss of drive / throttle response
