Having just purchased an ML270, it is now time to combat the incredible thirst by purchasing a little run around. Does anyone know if when buying a car through the scrappage scheme, there are any further discounts available, or is it just the £2000 scappage discount?

Its entirely up to the dealers what further discounts they may or may not give you.

Have you owned the car you are going to scrap for 12 months?

Kia and hyundai seem to be doing best out of it... ends soon though and you will need to take delivery before the deadline to ensure the discount.

Also have read on Honestjohns site that many dealers are runing out of small cars and will only take delivery now after the deadline.

I can do you a little Skoda Fabia or a Alfa Romeo MiTo if that's any good for you?

The MiTos start at £8,995 on scrappage and the Fabias start at £5,995 on scrappage.
The Alfas you get £2,000 and the Skodas you get at least £2,500 accross the range.

Thats laughable! Buy a fuel guzzler then buy ANOTHER car to try and 'offset' it!!! lol - you must be a comedian.....:D

I bought an SL500 and am now looking at a CL600 to offset its thirst;)

My neighbour just traded her R reg W202 C180 , which she'd had from new , in against some little Peugeot thingy , and they allowed her an extra £800 on top of the scrappage ! £2800 is a lot more than I'd have said a fairly average , but still reliable , W202 would have been worth .

I'd still rather have the 202 than a Pug.

I drove a Fabia 1.9 tdi the other day and it was awful... really.

Couldn't wait to give it back.

They aren't that bad. Compared to other superminis it's pretty nice to drive. Go and try a 207, Clio, Punto and you'll soon see the Fabia is one of the best of these types of cars. I for one don't really like the weightless feel of smaller cars but if I had to have a small car myself I'd probably spend it on a Polo, Fabia, or maybe a Swift.

I like big floaty boats to smoke around in.

Actually I quite liked the punto and the Polo but the Fabia was horrible.

Really nasty plastics and ergonomically all wrong. Fine if you live on a farm and just want basic ruggedness (except they are not rugged at all).

I'm trading in my trusty Ford Chavscort, which is a 1996 'P' plate. It's a true workhorse, but is obviously worht almost zero. Will be trading it in for a Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Diesel and it's 67.3mpg. I would love a Mito, but even with the £2k scrappage, it's way too expensive at £9k, when I can get the Fiat that will hold it's value way better than the Alfa, for £2k less.

Oh, and I'm oviously only buying a run around so I don't need to use my gas guzzling ML on a school/shopping run.

Also, what deadline are you referring to regarding small cars? The scrappage deadline is March 201 - are you seriously saying that some manufacturers can't deliver until after that? Six months away???

I was in a Toyota and then Peugeot dealer on friday looking to buy the Mrs a school run car. The toyota dealer didnt have a single car to show us in stock, all he could offer was for us to look around the outside only of a customers car in for a service!. They can get cars but its a 6-8 week wait. The peugeot people actually had a 207 in stock and also a 2nd hand 2 yr old one. We test drove the 2 years old one and the sounds deadening was little better than my 125cc Motorbike!. I said it sounds like the exhaust is blowing and the salesman said "No mate, the new ones sound like that too!!". We then looked (but didnt drive) the kia Picanto at the dealer next door, and that had a lot less metal (i.e none) showing in the cabin and felt better quality, but the Mrs didnt think the style of it was her cup of tea even though she had to agree it would be a quieter more relaxed drive than (being a 4cly vs the 107 3 cyl).

The salemen in all 3 cases said that whilst the scheme officially runs till march next year, there is a cap on the total amount as well, and given the huge take up of the scheme they have seen estimates that the original amount will be exhasted by the end of September. could be salesmanship of course, but we really have no definate way of tellingt for sure, as they are all in agreement. If you are thinking of using the scheme I would sign sooner rather than later.

Ill be interested to know wether or not the government will extend it, or wether once ended all that will be available is the manufactures £1000 share of the scheme.

Mandleson just announced the scheme will be extended by another 100,000 cars (was 200K up to now).
