Screen playing up

I have a 3-4 year old 17" Sony Vaio and the screen keeps going blank - I can see a faint glimmer of the image. Do you think it is the backlight that has gone? If so is that an expensive fix or easy DIY job?

It works when plugged into a televison - so if its too expensive I would be better off buying a monitor, but would prefer to have it fixed as it makes it more mobile etc.

Yep its the backlight or its controller thats gone.

Its probably not worth repairing, just use it as a desktop attached to a monitor instead.

if its just inverter, then prob get one of ebay for less than £30
