That's interesting. My Data Import says nothing about POIs - it says only 'Data Import' (the same in the manual as well) with no clue as to what data it means. I was reluctant to try importing POIs as there is a warning about corrupting the navigation data...
I will be doing this tonight. I didnt have time to sit down on my laptop to load the sample POI that I have.
I will come back to you guys either late this evening or tomorrow morning.
I did manage to take some photos for richard to establish what Comand version I have.

Right I have good news. I'm not sure if it was the ignition that did it or the new sd card that I got.
I used a sample file that malbry kindly provided to me (UK football stadiums) .
I swear to god I could not get this to work a few weeks back.
So the steps that I did this time:
The car was turned on. Slotted the sd card in and went to Personal POI in the menu in Nav Mode.
I could immediately see UK Football stadiums there. There was literally no 'importing data, this may take several minutes'. if there was one, it was so quick that I literally missed it. I could see the option to turn on audible alerts for the football stadiums.
I'm not entirely sure if it was the ignition that did it. I switched off the car, after I got it to work, and took the sd card out, put it back in and I could still see the POIs just fine with the ignition off.
The only other possible explanation is that I got a new sd card from amazon.
The card I got the second time was slightly different - I don't know if this played any part?
The first sd card was NTFS which I had to format back to FAT32.
The sd card I used today was already FAT32 so I didn't have to do anything to it.
Bear in mind that I have a Mac, so formatting to FAT32 is slightly trickier as it's not native to MAC OS X. Although I doubt this played any part.
mp3 playback was fine with the original sd card (after having formatted to FAT32) so I'm not sure if the first sd card is at fault here.

P.S I haven't actually got cameras to work yet, I just deem that POIs work based on the sample file.

Do you know when this version was released? Because the car was serviced around the 10th of May and this is something they should have done!
out of interest, what is the difference between NTG 5.1 vs NTG 5.5? Because Apple Car Play and Android Auto works for me just fine.

5.5 is replacing 5.2 to add Apple Car Play and Android Auto
5.1 came after 5.2 and supports Car Play / Android Auto - although for early cars it requires some hardware and software changes to the audio-system (genuine retrofit)
5.2/5.5 does not have a keypad. 5.1 does.

5.5 > 5.1 > 5.2 ?
And by keypad you mean the numbers on the right hand side of the sd card slot?
My spec sheet has the following line:
531 COMAND APS NTG5/NTG5.5
5.5 better than 5*2
I think 5*1 better than 5&2/5.5 because of the keypad, but on 5.2/5.5 cars the dashboard is nicer because the stereo is better integrated into the dashboard.
Look at photos of the C, GLC, new E and you'll see what I mean.
531 is the code used across the range for NTG5*1/5*2/5.5
(and yes, they did use * as a separator for 5*1 and 5*2)

right I see what you mean about the keypad, yes the menu dashboard is slightly different. I really like the control by the armrest on the GLC, wish the GLA had that rather than the cheap-looking scroll-wheel it's got.
so my final question, when did the 2016/2017 map update come through? I'm going to complain to Merc if it was available at service and was not done. That might go to show that a service is not what it should be.
ok I just got back from the dealer with my car only for them to tell me that the 2016/2017 is not yet available at their site. they ordered them but they haven't had them yet! I mean seriously? What sort of service is this?

Anyway I managed to get free pickup/drop off for when they become available. But you'd think that the 2016/2017 maps would be available before the end of 2017!

it's not so easy when you work full time to be honest. how can a service station lose it? i would have thought they can just do it somehow off the cloud. not via a stupid drive.
