It seems every time I start up my W205 C43 I get a rear seatbelt warning on the dash, even when the seats are completely empty of people, bags, coats, etc. Is this normal?

I believe this is normal and should only stay on for maybe 30 seconds or so. A way around the problem is to fasten the rear seat belts into their sockets if they are not regularly used. This seems to stop the seat belt warning sign from activating every time you start your car. At least it does on my x253. Hope this helps.

Some models don't have rear seat occupancy sensors, so the car knows the seatbelts are unbuckled but it does not know if someone is actually seating in the back or not.

On these models, there's a warning on the dash showing the condition of the rear seatbelts, it can be rid of by pressing OK on the steering wheel, otherwise it will go off by itself after 30 seconds or so.

The rear seatbelts status indicator will also come-up while driving whenever a rear seat occupant buckles or unbuckles a seatbelt.
