As I have been in the motor trade most of my working life and owning my own business for a short while it always grieves me to pay to have the car serviced so I do it myself [emoji6] I am going to be changing the engine oil and filter along with the transmission fluid and filter on my 90k C220 CDI Coupe in the next few weeks but one question, is there an oil change interval for the rear diff? And is it standard EP75/80 gear oil ? Thanks in advance.

I've looked extensively for a rear diff change frequency and only found reference to limited slip diffs. I suspect it's deemed to be filled for life but 90K seems like long enough.

The MB spec is 235.7 and the only oil I could find to that spec was Fuchs TITAN SINTOPOID FE 75W-85. That's a GL5 EP oil designed for diffs.

Edit: Link to the MB spec sheet for standard differentials http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/235.7_en.html

My indi tried to talk me out of changing the diff ATF on my C55 AMG, I insisted he do it as the car has over 100000 miles on it and it is new to me.

He did it anyway...2 litres of ATF 3403 is £62.00 + VAT ! Pretty sure your diff is not like mine, but if a MB specialist says its not necessary on a C55 AMG after 10 years and 100000 miles I doubt very much that you have anything to worry about unless you have a leak on the diff.

First thing I would check is if its actually got a drain plug? It may be the fill/level plug may also function as the drain/evacuate plug.

I did ask, apparently there is no specific change schedule for the diff oil.

Standard diff takes only 1L and shouldn't cost more than £15 for the oil.

Unless it could do some harm what reason is there not to do it.

Mine has only done 55,000 and there "3 filled for life" oils I feel should be changed soon:

Diff oil
Manual gearbox oil
super charger oil

There may well be an arguement for a least one oil/fluid change after the intial bedding in of rotating components. After that the arguement with modern fluids is perhaps less strong. You might then well ask what would be the best mileage to perform that at. Truth be told I have no answer to that one except perhaps to look back at past practice. 25- 30,000 miles comes to mind?

I changed my diff oil at 59k. The stuff that came out looked old and a little dirty but not burnt or anything.

Pretty easy job, used about 1.5 litres of the Fuchs mentioned above. So a cheap preventative maintenance job really.

AMG diffs are different and require more expensive oil and a different procedure.

OIL IS CHEAP...............ENGINES AND DRIVE TRAIN ARE EXPENSIVE!

diff oil

I changed mine after 4 years and 23000 miles fuchs sintopoid peace of mind, look after the car and it will look after you :thumb:

Not specific to the diff but on the topic of service intervals in general.

I can't recall if this link has been posted on the forum. This guy is an ex MB man turned indie in the US. His views or at least the way they are articulated are a little extreme but the theme is something we have discussed before. Which is that service intervals are not set in the best interests of long term ownership. They are set to make the vehicle look cheap to service for the extent of the warranty. I found it of particular interest that he claims for example that the M272 timing chain problems would not have occurred with shorter oil change intervals.

Also note on another theme that a class action law suite got US owners compensation for M272 engine failures and as usual that didn't happen here.
