This is a real problem for private sellers.. If you be awkward about it you will probably lose the sale.. Techinically you should ask to see their insurance certificate showing they are legel to test drive a car that doesnt belong to them. This isnt practical.
So your best bet is to drive them around, take them somewhere quiet and let them have a go.. You have to have your wits about you though, switch the car off, keep the key with you until you are sat in the passenger seat.
On the flip side, I have found it very annoying when ive been to look at a car and not been allowed to drive it properly... and i DO have the correct insurance!
