Selling my long-owned and much-loved Honda

Or if it's a Jazz when the gearbox fails, writing off otherswise low mileage and well maintained cars.

Did you have or know of a duff one then?

We had one from new in 2004 for 8 years and it was faultless.

One of the reasons people buy from dealers is because there is no warranty when buying privately.
Dealers warranty is the subject for another time.
Once you have the money and they have the keys then your responsibility ends. The onus is on them to find any issues before they hand over the cash.

That is not entirely true.

If you sell a vehicle that is unroadworthy without notifying the buyer of such fault and it is not obvious then you could be legally liable for a claim of damages etc against you.

Agreed but the OP is not trying to knowingly sell an un-roadworthy car he just wants to make sure that there is no comeback if the buyer finds something doesn't work properly.

A very good point, well made. Thank you. It is not true or fair to suggest that a private sale absolves the seller of any liability (ask me how I know) but believe me that it is true. A sale is a contract between to people based on honesty. If the seller knowingly lies or deliberately seeks to influence the buyer by not mentioning a problem that is known to the seller!! Then the seller could be in the dock.

Now.... If the buyer drives off and the wheels fall off before they get to the end of the road. It is likely that the buyer may be suspicious that he/she has been had and as such will come looking for their money back. If? The seller knew, but failed to mention, there was an issue with the wheels falling off the car, then the law would be on the side of the buyer.

Not relevant in this case. But worth considering if you were reading this thread, and thought, ah ha, now I can flog that old clunker rusting away away on my drive ;^)

I did not suggest they were, I was just clarifying the fact that there can, in certain circumstances be a claim against a private seller.

IIRC Sharon Stone and her special friend had matching hers and hers Lotus Esprits, one black, and one white.

Mrs D and I have matching his and hers ML63 AMG, one black, and one silver.

My Mom & Dad have matching his and hers Honda Jazz, one silver, and one, err, brown!

My Mom & Dad bbuy them at about 12 months old and run them forever. The silver one is a 2006 55 and had the gearbox rebuilt at around 4/5 years old and 25,000 miles.

Honda weren't interested in helping. They got it rebuilt by a transmission specialist, and to show Honda what they thought of them, they bought another one! That'll show em :)

In fact the they've had a surprising amount of recalls and warranty work. The two things which stand out on the silver 2006 55 car was rusty tailgate and faulty window mechanisms. For their faults my Mom & Dad both live their Jazzes.

That is the same shape as our's was.

I think we had a couple of recalls in the 8 years.

It was a great little car - we fitted a full size door in one once.

That's interesting though

Sounds like they are no better than Nissan.

I've come to the conclusion that CVTs are a crock of and I will be avoiding in future!

So, which modern unreliable-gearbox direction to go in next... :D

My Mom & Dad's was a manual too, so as straight forward as a gearbox can be. It's not that my Dad's a bad driver either, he was an advanced driver in the Police, so he can't be a bad driver.

Despite the problems, they love Honda Jazz, and I sense they'll buy another in the not too distant future.

I hired a Jazz when we where last in Cape Town, drove over 3000 miles Garden Route and every where else. One of the most comfortable cars i have ever driven. When the hire company showed me the car i thought this is not going to be a great experience, being used to great big Mercedes. Wrong, very impressed.

Well, I am now an ex-Honda owner. The car has gone. I did give it a hug, but could not watch it go. I handed over three keys, two alarm fobs, one spare battery (some of you may remember I once put the Honda battery in the Merc fob and could not lock my car for several months), and the radio key code card which had nestled in my wallet since August 2004, along with a huge sheaf of "service history"...and the car. I am sad, but not too sad. I didn't have tears like I did when I changed my 1997 Rav 4 for the Honda, and in exactly 12 days I will be driving the little Green Meanie, so keep your eyes peeled, you can't miss us if you see us!

Welcome back pal!! [emoji1360]

Thanks Lennox! Mind you, no one would believe the next chapter. About an hour or so later, I got a call from the purchaser. He asked "have you ever had trouble with the steering"? I was happy to say, very truthfully, "no". He had gone to his bank to do a transfer and the power steering is gone. All the fluid on the ground. Not a mark on my drive. Legally, I am covered. Morally, I'm not sure how I feel. I think I'll contact my usual mechanic and say that if the car is brought there for repair, I will contribute. I do very much trust this garage, which has been looking after my Honda, Merc and Vespa for ten years plus. I cannot believe this.

Hmmm fishing for a discount?

No indeed, a very genuine person I believe. One can hardly discount much from £900 for a 16 year old car.

edit: he has not contacted me subsequently as yet.

Tis the season for Power Steering hoses, clamps and seals to fail. I am being serious. This could be as cheap and simple as a split hose? Or a rack seal failure (big bucks)

How do I know this? I have just had to repair my wife’s BMW power steering (split hose at the reservoir). Last year (same time) my AMG blew a rack £1500.

The purchasers currently drive a Motability car, but after a PIP assessment, are losing it-----------???
They are having to pay £1,000 for insurance on a car costing £900------???
And to crown it all just one hour after driving it away the steering has failed ??
They do seem to to be having a run of bad luck.

Have you got your money?

Yes indeed, a bad day, and it got worse (then it got better). The purchaser contacted his insurer through which he has rescue services. They told him it would be late on before they could get to him (he eventually waited six hours, during which his phone battery ran down). His insurer actually suggested he lock the car and leave the keys in the front wheel arch. He went a bit ballistic at that, understandably. The rescue eventually came, stated he could not fix the fault and towed it to the garage I use (thank goodness). As he was off a night shift, he slept, but his wife was sleepless worrying about the cost. (I found all this out yesterday.) Anyway, my garage mechanic put everything back to look at it, pronounced it a simple fix by cutting off part of a corroded return pipe, added two clips and the car was fine. I actually decided to pay for the repair and the purchaser told me he was taking a crate of beer to the mechanic. The purchaser made a complaint to his insurer and they apologised and discounted his premium by £50. The purchaser apologised to me in case he had been "off" with me, but I fully understood his frustration and in any case he was always polite.

It would appear your intial assessment of the buyer was accurate and my cynicism was unjustified. Glad for everyone it turned out OK

Strong believer in karma, me. 99% of people are really nice to me, I find. I really wanted that car to be perfect for them, as much as a 16 year old car can be, anyway. The mechanic actually said "after all these years, why today?"
