Saw one of these today- a Senator B 24v by the sound of it- lovely straight six noise. It was dark blue so I suspect it was ex-POLICE "plain clothes" traffic or dignitary escort car. They were evidently capable of mega-miles when serviced correctly. Here in its more normal livery as a "Jam Sandwich".

Proper cars. I do miss the days of v6s in every day cars.

I agree. I've had a few 6 pot motors in my time, 3.3 Vauxhall Cresta, 2.4 Nissan Laurel, 3.0 Nissan Maxima and 3.5 Honda Legend. I sometimes wish my W211 E220cdi was a petrol 6, I was in my son's S-type Jag today and the sound was sublime. I probably wouldn't enjoy the mpg drop though.

My dad was primarily a Vauxhall man and worked his way through their cars as his company vehicles. He had a lovely dark red Senator with a lovely dark coloured leather interior.

I had two V6 Omegas... for 4 years, then for 7 years. Great cars. In fact I only moved-up to Mercs when Opel/Vauxhall stopped making the Omega. Before the Omega I drove a Scorpio 2.9 company car...

Straight 6 or V6?
I always understood the I (straight) 6 was the more smooth version?

Mrs D moved to Mercedes from an Omega too, a 2.5 CD. I loved it, whenever I put my foot down it sounded like a scene from Police, Camera, Action!

I had a soft spot for the big engined Vauxhall’s, all the way through to HSVs. The Omega in particular was a much better car than jt’s residuals suggested. I would love to find a 4.0 Irmscher.

Fun fact: GM tried selling the Omega in the US as the Cadillac Catera. It flopped....

Yep, excellent motors,
i had a Senator 24v, and before that 2 Senator A's
3.0 CD. :)

These I6 engines were known as a CIH[ Cam in head design] which was basically an engine with a single overhead cam but which acted on the valves indirectly via a rocker arm arrangement. Exactly like the Mercedes M103 engine. Here's a picture of the bored out IRMSCHER 24 valve version

Had lots of fun in an ex Police , Carlton 3000 GSI 12v .

Omega 3.0 24V Elite too , but the rear heated seats burnt through the leather !

My favourite was the chevette HSR, totally mad as a road car!

It's funny comparing these cars with current ones. I had a Granada 3.0 Ghia ("Sweeny car") which was the bees knees back then, but from a quick Google only had 138 bhp!

Had a Carlton GSI 3000 24V many years ago and that shifted and when the dual ram air intake opened you could it feel it pull even more. Liked to drink fuel though!

My dad had something like one of those, it was the only car he owned which I had no interest in.

It might have been brown, it was manual and had an awful gearbox.

A bit like my 1978 SAAB 99 Turbo - 145 bhp, but anything up to 800kg less to haul around compared to a Mondeo or E-Class.
BHPs were more powerful and worth a lot more, back in the day.

I drove a senator for a while fitted with a Ferguson Formula 4 wheel drive.
