Was on way home last week when I heard a loud screech from the engine bay, and a few seconds later the battery light came up on the dash. Luckily I was only round the corner so pulled up and opened the bonnet to find the belt looking like string, and the two guide wheels at the top had disintegrated. Got the new parts on Saturday and put them on.
Now rather than take the fan out to get room, I put the new belt on and left it off the alternator pulley, and used a breaker bar to pull the tensioner back and it was so easy to slip on the belt.
Thought I’d share the tip as it says to put a pin into the tensioner to hold it back. Total time to replace belt and pulleys was only 15 mins.

Always a good idea to remove the belt and spin the pulleys once in a while to see if any are feeling rough. The idler pulleys are usually a 5 min job / £10 part so an avoidable breakdown.

£86 for 2 pulleys and belt from Mb with 10% discount. To be fair, the belt was on the list to do anyway, but it went the night before it was due to be put away for the winter. May as well replace the other pulleys as well whilst it sits in the garage to be on the safe side.

I did just that at around £200 for parts from MB
