I've just been quoted £1000 on mymercedesservice.co.uk for a Service A on my A45, is this typical?

No, because an A service is circa £300

Click on additional items for the breakdown on what’s due and price

omg I could kiss you! I didn't see the additional items it had automatically added on, you're right it's dropped to £300 odd. Phew!

Don’t skimp on those additional, they’re due for a reason

If the price is too much then perhaps think about a Mercedes service plan, works out cheaper across a few years and everything is included (+ breakdown cover)

If not, find a reputable independent and tell them what you need doing and what’s due. The number following service A/B should tell you the additional stuff

What were the additional items that would have cost so much?

Ouch! That’s a lot for a gearbox oil change. The rest are reasonable.

Brake fluid is scheduled with a B service, so may have missed that in previous schedules, or it's been done but not recorded.

You’d also be better off joining the Mercedes owners club. £50 a year, and you get 10% off parts and 20% off servicing. Just check with your local Mb dealer that they will honour it. To cut cost on your transmission oil, you could buy the service kit and just pay for labour or find an independent Mb approved independent garage near to you. Hope this helps.

Dear god all of those seem expensive to me, it I were you I would be looking at a good indi for more reasonable costs.
although maybe I am detached from reality, since it only costs the price of fluids&parts as I do most things myself.

Nope, you're right, they're insane. Even the A service itself is bad enough- £300 for an oil and filter change. Jeepers!

I'm convinced these prices are just done to make ServiceCare look like it's a good deal.

They are! Mercedes want everyone to be paying monthly for their cars, maintenance, etc.

It’s good business to receive regular payments, it brings in money earlier (in most cases) and reduces the risk of a customer switching to another brand/garage.

Brake fluid isn’t exclusive to a B service
Correct.

Brake fluid change is time dependent, not mileage dependent. It should be replaced every two years. Cars which are due a service based upon time rather than mileage, so those which typically cover less than 12,000 miles per annum from new, are due a change every second year coinciding with the B service. If servicing is done more frequently then it could fall on an A service.

In short.... as others said: You can either take-out an MB Service Care Plan (which will reduce the price to around £450 but you'll need to commit to at least 2 services) and get the service done at the dealer, or find a good independent specialist who will carry-out the service for you for much less than the MB dealer is asking.

But about the worse thing you can do (financially) is getting the dealer to just carry-out the service as a one-off at the price they are asking.

As these service costs are widely available before the car is purchased, I am surprised at the number of owners of feign shock when they get to the first service..

I use an independent and he somehow was able to access the full service history for my wife's car. SL has it's last service under warranty in a few months and then it will also be going to the indy.

I'm going back a bit, but I did this before getting my car. The dealer regaled me with great lists of work and costs and I had serious second thoughts about getting the car.

I bought the old ServicePlus package, at quite signficant cost. I'd visit the dealer and be regaled with great lists of work, to which I'd eagerly nod. Then they'd ask how I'd be paying and I'd say "ServicePlus" and the service advisor would visibly slump. Remarkably it would turn out that none of that work was needed, just an oil change and a quick wipeover. One time I'd only just got back home and they rang to say the car was ready!

You were really unlucky. When I see your name I always thing ServicePlus!

ServicePlus worked out well for us. Sorry for rubbing it in. Again!

Basically if you've bought a new MB or MB used approved it's only worth getting a main dealer service until the warranty runs out - as I did with my S204, had it serviced by the dealer 2 weeks before the 12 month tier 1 warranty ran out so they could fix anything they found under warranty. After that it's indie all the way. As an example, my 204 needed a B service a couple of years ago, MB online pricing was north of £500, my indie doing the service in accordance with MB ESS and using OEM parts was less than £300. Slight downer is that he cannot update the MB DSR (although I have a service invoice for what was done), but many indies can.
