Sorry for a weird title, but I have had this Service B coming up in the drivers display for the last week, I haven't been in a rush to do anything as it was supposed to have been serviced at the start of the year, but now it's getting annoying so thought I'd see if this sounds right or not before parting with money I don't have, as the car maxed me out, but at the same time I don't want to do any damage either, it's purely the timing of it, as I'm used to the once a year type of service, but then again those cars are no comparison to this one, any thoughts ?

I have just started to get another message come up as well, but it doesn't last long enough for me to read it fully, and I guess it's what's pushed this query, but it's something like oil level when cold or similar (I have the memory span of a goldfish) ?

The car is a CLK320 Avantgarde Auto Coupe W209, 2004, on a 53 plate, with 116,8..k on the MoT just before buying, and is not much over 117k now, so I've only done a few hundred miles since getting it, I do under 5k a year generally speaking, I'm still adjusting and learning bit's and pieces, you can't imagine the joy I found that the car seat and column are key activated, it is a dream with my legs, I only stumbled on it by accident fumbling my way round to setting the clock and more, I still have to figure out the angle of the mirrors when in reverse, but I'm loving it so far.

Service B is the larger service including recalibration of a lot of things. If the previous owner kept doing a basic service and marked the service as completed then your car is due for one. Do you have a service record?

TBH I don't know what to think, I believe it has been taken 'care' of, but can't find a paper trail yet, I keep meaning to try and get in touch with the previous owner and piece it together a bit more, the seller swears he showed me a receipt for a service in 2019, but it's not in the service book, but may be in the other paperwork, so I don't really have an answer for these questions, probably another part of what has prompted this query as well, but I don't know if my efforts to set the car up, bearing in mind the comand unit has been replaced by a pioneer unit, so I have been using the steering wheel buttons to set up the bits as I see if I can fine tune it more, which involves me selecting to reset the settings to get back into the menu to do this, several times now, I don't know if that may have done something ?

Thanks for the replies guys.

OK if it was a reliable Mercedes specialist then they might have done a B service. You can check the history with an MB dealer.
The other thing you can do is go to MB site and book a service half way, it will lookup the history if any and suggest service items. Headlight calibration etc will have to be done at a specialist with a lot of equipment.

Also judging from my 2003 S class, the comand back then didn't had any car configuration options. I might be wrong about the CLK

ASSYST on your car is flexible, i.e. the car will let you know when the next service is needed, and it is not at fixed intervals.

But even so, a few hundred miles and 3 months are well below the minimum for triggering the 'next service due' message.

The most likely explanation is therefore that the service indicator wasn't reset.

Whether the service was carried-out but the service indicator wasn't reset.... or it wasn't reset because the service wasn't carried-out... it is difficult to tell.

If the car only did a few hundred miles since it was supposed to have been serviced, then the oil should look new - petrol engines take a long time before the oil turns black - have a look at the condition of the oil?

Either way, the service history is paramount, it will allow you to know when service items such as air and fuel filters, spark plugs, brake fluid, ATF, coolant etc are due next.

Just mentioning it as an example. The 2004 CLK probably doesn't breve intelligent headlights

Not by about 10yrs..

Nothing on a 2004 CLK that cannot be done by any good indie, or competent DIY mechanic

Well the deeper I look the worse state I get, I definitely need to get hold of the previous owner, because I'm starting to fear the salesman wasn't fully honest with me, to start with I don't believe the car has been abused, but that said, I am suspecting that the latter services may have been done by themselves or similar, it would explain why the service indicator has come up, I have also been to a dealerships site to get an idea of how much this service might be, and that was before knowing or seeing above about doing this.

I stumbled on some details by pure luck (as I only wanted a price guide), and what I saw made me even more confused, because according to MB, the car is over 200k, so my first thought was it must be a replacement engine in the car then, But, I can follow the mileage all the way back to 2008 on the DVLA MoT check site, which was 33k, to 116k when I got it, which fits as far as I see it, yet MB see's something different, so I then think about the private reg on the car may be causing some mix up of details, possibly human error, I don't know.

I will try and remember to check the oil tomorrow, but it will depend on my hands, which is also why I only get to do stuff later in the day as they give me a bit more ability, it's also why I am not able to get back to reply to you, typing in up to 3 pairs of gloves on is not easy I can tell you lol, but they are a bit more manageable now it's getting warmer, so I will try and do that when I can and report back.

Many thanks for all the replies guys.

P.S. The lights mentioned, I have no idea what that means above, but this was advertised as having Bi Xenon lights, something I have wanted for a long time now.

If its been less than 14 days since you bought it then just return it if it was from a dealer.

Well I finally got to check my oil, or didn't I should say lol, the dip stick must be hidden, so I will have to google it and see if I can find it, most likely under the cover, but I don't want to force that off until I know what is involved, but I have no doubt there are plenty of guides around taking you round the engine bay, as to taking it back, it has gone way past 14 days (I got it in January), and even if it hadn't I don't want to take it back, it has features that I would never be able to find elsewhere, not that I could afford anyway, and with my health they are a dream come true.

Don't get me wrong I seriously appreciate your advice, and I can't say I wouldn't say the same thing not knowing more, but the car doesn't feel abused, the power is instant and smooth, and I am sure as can be the export\import + private reg, has been the cause of a lot of what I am finding going along, I think I need to get hold of a place that specialises in Mercedes (I suspect it's what to get as opposed to the corner garage ?), as I suspect Mercedes directly would cost several body parts, I'm sure you have a list of places somewhere, so I'm off to search for that now, but Thanks for the reply.

Needing a service B is normal. My car had shown a service B is due even though I did that last year. Since the car was always serviced at Mercedes we just followed their schedule instead.

I think you'll find there is no dipstick, to Mercedes this is a service tool and not left installed. You can buy on eBay but make sure you get one with the small diamond molding just above the measurement area.

I wouldn't mind going to Mercedes if I could afford it, I'm guessing they are very expensive compared to an independant specialist :(
And if the car wasn't as old as it is (04) I would certainly consider it a lot more dependant on circumstances, I couldn't find a list of such places here, but I saw a place down in Waterlooville mentioned a few times in searches here, so I am getting in touch with them to see what they suggest, I wish they were closer, but if they are the best and closest, then it has to be worth it.

As to the dipstick, I did some searching, and indeed I found they do not have such a beast (it's a first for me), within the bigger beast lol (I think it must have eaten it o_O), But, I did find some very interesting tips on how to do this check, even to reset the service (aimed at those who service their own car), so what use is a good car if it doesn't have any secret menus to access , I will have a play to check it out tomorrow fingers crossed (as long as they don't hurt anyway lol), needless to say I'm not about to change anything until I know a damn sight more about these cars, but as the car is commenting about oil several times now, who am I to deny it's request lol, but I will update as I go, Thanks for the replies guys.

Sorry to reply to my own post, I was adding an edit to it, but it turns out there is a 30 minute limit (fair enough I have used such tools over time as well), so here it is in full.

As I am here, 2 quick query's (I hope), I have 2 things which need figuring out, possibly the easier of the 2, with the bonnet up, looking from the front to the back right corner in the bay, there is a big hole, I don't know if this is supposed to be there, for some system upgrade people may add, or something is missing from it, so just need a sanity check here, I attach a pic to help here.

The 2nd issue is really annoying, we all know what having the blower on to clear the screen etc, well I get the same noise coming from the rear nearside (passenger), the only time it shuts up is when the blower is turned Off, it's at full bore no matter what speed or direction it's set to, it only stops when the blower is turned off, I've never even heard of such a thing before, do any of you guy's have any idea's on this, and the other part ?

On a 15 year old car I wouldn't have thought the usual A/B servicing will have been followed. After 7 years MB used to provide "value" servicing.

I have looked for a price for a service with Mercedes but you have to damn near book the service to get a price, not to mention the history they showed just before I closed the page was this engine was over 200k, and I know that is not true as the MoT's show the mileage over the years, but I will see what the recommended place says first, but Thanks for the info.
