Hi ppl,

need some help regarding my recent service. Hope it all makes sense!!

Ok I have a full MBsh with stamped service book. My C180 was due for a service as it reached 64,500 miles. Unfortunately having looked at the book I misplaced it and was unable to find it before I booked it in into a specialist. I told them that I have a book and when I find it I'll bring it in to get it stamped. However I wasn't sure what service it needed. The garage said according to the mileage it was due for a B service (maintenance).

No probs. Got it done. Paid an arm and a leg, but thats life.

Anywayz, that was two weeks ago and i've found the book, but to my dismay it says that at 64,000 mls the service should be a A service (lube).
The service before was a B service and the next service should be a B also.

So why did the specialist garage say it was due for a B service when it was due for a A???

Have they breached there contract under the Supply of Goods and Services Act and can I get a refund??

Any help would be appreciated.

tnx :(

advice needed

Hi guys,

any advice pls...

Servicing tasks and intervals are advisory.

If you agreed to a B and the B service was performed correctly the contract is satisfied.

The advice to perform a B service may be based on inspection, experience, and if fitted the onboard ASSYST.

A and B servicing is recommended based on many factors, rarely on mileage alone.

The extra servicing will do no harm, except that on your bank balance !

The car will tell you what service it needs, presuming it has ASSYST which it should. Press the 'O' buttom on the dash twice quickly and the mileage display will change to a countdown to the next service due. The display will show one spanner for an A service and 2 spanners for a B service.

Do you know if the 'specialist' reset the service indicator or even know that the car has one?

thanks guys,

Unfortunatley my '97 C180 doesn't have an onboard ASSYST. Therefore the service book and mileage have been used on previous occasions.

The point is when I phoned them up to book the car in, I was asked what service it needed. I told them I wasn't sure as I had misplaced the service book and then I was asked the mileage. Only then their reply was that it was due for a B service.

They made a professional diagnosis even before they've scene the car!!!.

Sure, I paid for a B service and as for as I know it's been done ok. But whats the point when the service before was a B service and the next one due is suppose to be a B service.. When really it was due for an A service.

Whats the point in having a stamped service book??

How can a specialist make decision, which according to my logic is wrong, resulting in me being over charged.

help.

Probably experience of similar model cars at that mileage combined with a healthy dose of 'trying on their luck'

Replacing working parts on the pretence they are faulty is provably illegal. Adjusting, lubricating, replacing wear components etc though is a judgement call. Sounds like your mechanic is somewhat lacking in professionalism.

Take some time to get to know a decent mechanic, discuss and agree work whilst inspecting the car together. MB Dealership in Harrow takes it to the extreme, clipboards and diagrams, walk around the workshop, bill getting bigger and bigger...

Stamped up service book shows the car has been given regular care and attention. The name on the stamp means different things to different people.

I'd prefer to see frequent stamps and spares invoices from when the car actually needed work than clockwork main dealer stamps and nothing else.
