Service plans for MB approved used cars

Car
CLK 320 CDI
I'm in the process of purchasing a 2006 CLK 320 CDI (27,000 miles) which has about 3 months manufacturer's warranty remaining plus I get usual 12 month used car warranty which runs from the date of purchase.

My question is what are my options to extend the warranty beyond the 12 months and what service plans are available for used cars? I have been looking on the MB web site and would seriously consider taking up the MB Total Care Plan but it appears to be applicable to new cars only. I can't find details of any service plans for used cars, do they exist?

I drive about 20,000 miles a year and intend to keep the car for 3 to 4 years. Any further advice would be very welcome.:)

There was something called service plus (search for it on here) which you paid monthly and got a lot of dealer servicing etc. It was so good i.e. it worked out cheaper for the customer that they pulled it.

You will be able to extend the warranty with Mercedes, but to be honest I'd save the money you'd pay out for a warranty to put torwards repairs as and when they come up. The CLK320cdi is a lovely choice and a fairly reliable car too.

When my car came up to it's 3 year old end of warranty MB wanted £600+ to extend it one year. I went with warranty direct. £320 for 13 months cover paid over 10 months interest free. Got them to agree to cover wear and tear from day 1 and cover Comand etc. 2 months after had a problem - cost to repair £600+ WD agreed to repair it and it was fixed within 3 days. Had the cheque back from WD before credit card bill arrived - so for me I am pleased I didnt go with the MB warranty extension. But others may have had differing experiences with WD.

Hi Steve, thanks for your post.

I guess any scheme that would save the average punter a bit of dosh at MB expense was doomed from day one. I do pretty fair mileage so reckon I'll just chuck a hundred quid or so in a maintenance account each month to pay for repairs as and when needed, hopefully I won't get any big surprises.

I took the CLK out for a 40 mile test drive and I was very impressed with the performance and handling, it also has the sport pack...yummy.

£100pm buys an awful of repairs and this is what I tend to do. If I don't spend it then the fund grows, if something comes up its covered :thumb:

For catastrophic things like gearbox or engine failure MB would contribute under a good will scheme (probably very substancially upto an age of 6yrs), but to retain this you would have the keep up the dealer servicing of the car.

Enjoy your new car and post up pics etc.

TotalCare isn't total - it only covers servicing and pads/disks and windscreen wipers.

I have ServicePlus and I'm pretty sure that was intended to be the same as TotalCare but MB messed it up and it's coverage is far wider than was intended. Having said that, and touching a big piece of wood, I am waaaay out of pocket on ServicePlus - as MB are picking up the bill, the car needs astonishingly little work. I'm still on my original pads and disks (the dealer said they would have like to have changed them due to corrosion at the last MOT but MB wouldn't let them - what's the betting the car would have failed if I'd been a cash customer?).

If you wanted to cover against catastrophic failures then you could get a warranty from someone like Warranty Direct. Whatever you do, check the mileage limitations - with your mileage even the top MB warranty might have quite reduced cover.

Just an update on this really, just been to the stealers to ask about the SERVICE CARE package, no-where in the docs does it say AMG models arent covered, but after the Dealer rang the HO they confirmed AMG`s are not covered and advised the dealer to remove any service care brochures from the shelf as an ammended one was due to be released!
