i have a 2000 E220 CDi, does anyone know how often the timing belt or chain needs to be changed? i have owned it for 2 years (and put 27,000 on clock) and have changed the oil (5 oils changes in total), the coolant and brake pads so far and thats all - which in total has cost me under £250!

The last time i had the oil change the mechanic 'briefly' checked it over and said all was fine!

Iv not had a single service with MB since purchase, though i did have a faulty sensor replaced at an independent that cost me £180

Im a bit worried, iv sort of neglected this car a bit and it could do with a winter service!

anyone know any reasonably priced independents in the NW (bolton/preston/blackburn area)?

All Mercedes engines have chain driven camshafts which have no scheduled replacement and, when high quality engine oil has been used, generally should outlast the engine, at the very worst, you may need to replace the slipper tensioner but only at very high mileages >150k - 200k in my opinion.

The timing chain has a rating of 5 degrees of cam lag against the crank position before replacement is required. I'd be surprised if this was less than 200K on a diesel.

For general work I'm sure Ian Walker would be happy to oblige. www.124works.com

An MB dealer wouldn't do much (if anything) more than change the oil and glance over the car, so it's probably not as neglected as you think. And it sounds like it's had a lot more oil changes than the bare minimum.

The only obvious thing not mentioned is the brake fluid is supposed to be changed every 2 yrs, but this is likely to have been done at least once before you got the car.

hi i get my c200 cdi serviced by a merc specialist inc service reset at hashmi auto , fort street, blackburn and its very cheap £50 - £70 for a A service as i provide my own geniune service parts which i buy from mercedes blackburn.

I bought my 2004 E220 CDI with 80,000 on the clock and have just replaced the serpentine belt at 180,000 miles. The timing chain seems fine but I do use good quality engine oil and change the engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, every 20,000 miles. I use my car as a taxi and do all the servicing myself, quite a straight forward procedure, just don't do what I did if you're working outside and empty the sump on a windy day
