I see our local Shell garage is now advertising a litre saving per tank by using their new "fuelsaver" fuel.

Anybody got any results to post.

I do hope it's not going to be a repeat of the "Formula Shell" fiasco from many years ago (for those of us old enough to remember that!)

we have looked at this for work fleet

1 litre per 50L (minimum) = 2% saving
Not to be sniffed at as a saving is a saving but...

Pump up the tyres, shut the sunroof, turn off the a/c in winter and lay off the brake pedal (plan ahead type driving) will turn in way over a couple of MPG (which is nearer 10%) saving

Marketing depts, don't ch'a love them

Sorry I dont believe a word of it. What are they saying by using this new wonder petrol you can get a litres worth more fuel out of a tank? Whats that ? About 6-8 miles? Thats easily achievable with considerate driving.

Same **** with different name. Save fuel by econimic driving style. On other hand if you can afford Merc and specific type of engine/fuel then you should stop looking for saving of 2-5%.

I do notice Shell is 1p per litre cheaper than Sainsbury's across the road at present.

I'm on my second tank!

Will keep an eye on consumption, at present my E320 cdi is @

Total gals 678.34 Total cost £3,487.76 Total miles 26691.00 MPG 39.35

I'm sure there is something in this fuel that will burn better or whatever and therefore increase efficiency by a very small margin. 1 litre of fuel is nothing... however i agree with the other posts above, in the real world you could save or loose that easily by different driving techniques and not really worth worrying about.

if you really want to save fuel, buy the most economical car you can and make sure you only buy from the cheapest petrol station in your area.

a few people i know have recently have traded in their car to buy something more economical, but if you work it out it would take them a few years of driving it to even break even again once you cater for the loss in the part ex price and the depreciation on the newer car....

Wouldnt higher octane fuel give a bigger improvment to MPG in most cars anway. My local Sainsburys sells 98 at only 2P more (But costs 119.9p).

Watch the clever wording. It doesn't say you save a litre per tank but says you save UP TO a litre. Could be a thimble full. Probably will be.

BTW I'm prepared to sell any member here my car for up to £20,000 off what it is worth. Offers on a postcard, please.

Yeah it does mate but i tell you one thing... not by much! im lucky to get 330 miles from a full tank on my W202 C200 and thats motorway driving too!... but sometimes i do have a heavy foot :P.

Exactly what I thought - 2% is very hard to prove one way or the other. We do a lot of fuel analysis but only rarely on the actual pump fuel which is usually batch blended and dosed with additives. I'll ask around and see if I can find out what they have done. As both the diesel and gasoline specs are pretty tight, it's quite hard to improve combustion by simple blending (unless you want to lose a lot of money in so doing - that's why they all charge extra for superfuels). My guess is that they have put a small amount of improver in the blend and also very slightly tweaked the blend a little for both gasoline and diesel.

I won't be rushing out and buying it. As above, if I want to improve economy by more than 2%, I'll drive more carefully, turn off AC, close windows and get rid of all the junk in the car (sorry, Mrs O'Rilla - you're walking :D)

Is it me, or is there a flaw in everyones logic here?

Various people have said that if they want to save fuel they can pump their tyres up, turn off the A/C drive like snails etc and do it that way, rather than use the wonderfuel.

But surely by using the wonderfuel (if you believe the claims - I'm not saying its true or not) you can save fuel by NOT doing all these things. Cakes and eating spring to mind.

Alternatively, do all the things above, STILL use the wonderfuel and save EVEN MORE!

If its no more expensive than the normal stuff, how can you lose? Admittedly you might not win, but a chance of winning, with no chance of losing is better odds than most things in life!

Have I missed something obvious?

Taken from Shells webpage:
Shell FuelSave Unleaded is a new and efficient Shell fuel created to help save you up to 1 litre per tank* at no extra cost – so whether you’re on a hectic school run, family taxi duty or just popping to the shops, that’s one less thing to think about.

So they claim it won't cost more!

Good on them if true - not that they sell the cheapest fuel anyway, but fair cop

Is it just a cetane rating improvement?

The Millers I use does, I think, improve mpg, along with other benefits with 'value' supermarket fuel.
