Should have bought a CLS!?

2016 W212 E-Class Saloon SE
I bought my first MB, a 2016 W212 E-Class 220d SE BLUETEC saloon in April last year, it had around 35,000 miles on it and came from a main dealer as an approved used car. A must have option was the Intelligent Lighting System (ILS), anything else was a bonus, which on my car also included the Dynamic Active Multi-Contour Seat option on the drivers seat. I bought it to replace an ageing 2011 / 160,000 mile Skoda Superb which served me well, but after half a dozen Skoda's I fancied a change and had always hankered after a Merc.

10 months later I haven't regretted my choice, after a couple of early glitches that were promptly fixed under warranty (a couple of NOx sensors) the car is a peach to drive. The SE's 17" alloys smooth out the potholes, the 7G auto box is silky smooth, the heated seats and LED headlights are brilliant at this time of year and it happily returns 47-55mpg on my 162 mile / day commute.

But, and there's always a but! When looking at the E-Class, I really wanted a CLS Shooting Brake. I know opinion's vary on their looks, but for me they are still one of the best looking cars on the road.

So, now I'm looking again. I don't want to spend more money so I'll be looking at a higher mileage and older CLS if I want to sell the E-Class and buy a CLS without spending any extra cash.

Webuyanycar has my E-Class at £11,750 (it now has 52,000 miles on it). I recently spotted this CLS...

£12,990, 2014, 77,000 miles, 3.0 litre V6 and some really nice options, sunroof, reverse camera, memory seats, heated and cooled front seats, Driver Assistance Package (I think this is adaptive cruise control, lane assist and blind spot assist?) and Comfort Package (think this is additional seat adjustment?). The only thing I might miss is the LED ambient lighting which is strangely absent.

It's a private sale, but the other cars on the sellers drive offer me some confidence that the guy is into his cars. It comes with the remainder of an aftermarket warranty too. I ran the reg through WBAC and it's value is estimated at £11,000.

Clearly some negotiation would be required, but I'd welcome your thoughts on the possible change.

Fuel economy has me slightly worried, but I'd sacrifice some economy for that performance! Here are some pictures...

Any thoughts, positive and negative would be welcome :-)

Check the CLS is an EU6 diesel on the tfl checker.

I think the 15 plates were the first but could be wrong.

I wouldn’t buy an EU5 or older diesel now personally.

Go for it - I love the CLS SB - both the engine and the feel of the car will be a step up.

(I wouldn’t read too much into what other cars are on the drive to be honest; I was sold an A6 in 2005 that turned out to be basically f*cked - gearbox & engine were shot - by a bloke who had a brand new Bentley on the drive).

I don't think it is EU6, it is the BlueEFFICIENCY rather than the BLUETEC (which came in with the facelift I think?).

My current E-Class is BLUETEC and the AdBlue tank has robbed me of my spare wheel well. I don't think the older BlueEFFICIENCY gets the AdBlue tank, so not sure if this is good or bad for DPF life...

I'm based in York, so it is unlikely I'll ever find myself in a major built-up city on a regular basis.

Are there any other disadvantages of an EU5 engine? I noticed it seems (at least on paper) that the BlueEFFICIENCY has slightly more power output over the later BLUETEC.

Ouch, I guess the more cars, and the more expensive those cars are then the further you have to stretch those allocated 'car funds', so you make a fair point.

I did a bit of digging after the fact and found out he’d not been happy with the part ex Bentley had offered him so put it on Auto Trader for £1500 more and sold it to me; I was very green about cars in those days and bought it as we’d just had our first child (which I’d told him about) and he knew he’d sold me a dud because it had been patched up to make sure it lasted a couple of days; enough time to get shot of it to a mug like me!
