Whats DCP?

Of course you should.
It's stupidly easy - check out the 1and1 site for tools
Register/park a .co.uk domain for a few quid a year - then you will also have a proper e-mail address.

As a web designer, I'm biased so think yes, a website is a good idea!

Home page, how to, mods, testimonials, gallery and contact page. That should get you going.

Do it in a modern, clear style with easy to use navigation. Avoid flash if possible (except for plug-ins) as Google is not friendly with flash sites, and use key words in your text, but don't spam them!

PM me in you want any advice. :)

:D 1and1 is my enemy! :D

Seriously, I've noticed since the advent of these "template" sites my new business enquiry level has massively dropped. The small businesses requiring brochure type sites now do it themselves. I wouldn't want to be starting out in this business now with no large client contacts!!

Yes, but PROPER websites can only be built by designers. It's just that places like 1&1 make it ridiculously easy for the small businessman.

I do wonder if a lot od the sites built people actual test them though.

Some car sites for example are horrible to navagate round and have far too much going on.

Indeed.

What I charge for is the service, SEO and back-up. But these days it's only the larger companies who are willing to pay for that! Thankfully for me, I started this business in the late 90s and have built up loyal clients. But to start out now must be hard...

Yes! That is your answer. Simple.
But, and there is a but! Think carefully about what you will put on and who is going to see your website. Yes, it is quite easy to make a website - but there are lots of terrible ones out there in the world! And a terrible website could even lead to negative effects!

I would recommend consulting a specialist as someone kindly offered above! - TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOMEONES GENEROSITY!

Or go on a website design course, you can pick them up rather cheaply from discount websites like Groupon or detailed books and videos from Amazon etc..! There are lots of factors to consider: keywords, google adwords, page rank on google etc... You really need to know and be aware of these sorts of things! But in honesty, it´s best to try and go on a course or consult a professional.

It´s not hard - but you will regret not knowing this stuff when you began the site.

Above all, keep it up to date. There's nothing worse than a website with old comments, reviews and photos. It must be continually refreshed to keep people coming back.

My worst moan are websites with poor spelling and grammer. I'd never buy from anyone who lacks attention to such detail. in this day and age there's no excuse.

Why is it that CKLclive cannot advertise his business in his signature but others can?

Nobody can...except they are official sponsors.

Some members have had permission to advertise, under strict ruling.
Unauthorised advertising is not allowed and will be removed.

I would say definitely go for it Clive, just make sure that it looks totally professional and mirrors what your work stands for.
I'm sure that there are some fantastic repairers out there but there excellence isn't matched by their website. It's like a shop window, if the stock looks tired, badly displayed, dead flies and dust etc, then people will just walk on by until they see something more appealing.

Hmmm kettle.pot, black perhaps?:D

This is exactly my point. Mistakes occur, when you're typing quickly whilst trying to do other things, and don't have time to check your work.

Websites should be created with care and full use of spelling and grammar checks as well as competent proof reading and testing of all links and references.
