Should I change the timing chain on my GL350 2103 X166?

Hi All

Last week my 4x4 was diagnosed with a cracked manifold after the 4x4 started to loose power. Turbo is fine. Is it advisable to change the timing chain whilst the engine is out to replace the manifold? As it is the 4x4 runs great with no issues regarding the timing chain. Last October the oil cooler was replaced and it was recommended to change the inlet motor (I forgot what it was called) at the same time.

Any advise greatly appreciated.

Depends, what's the mileage? service history etc? Sometimes its best to just leave it if its not broken. But sometimes its best to do the preventative maintenance while you in there. Depends also on how long you will keep the car for.

On 97k. Fsh half dealer half independent merc specialist. I like to think I'd keep the car for another 4 years ish

About 5k per year for the last 4 years. Currently 7k

I would change it for piece of mind while engine is out, if finances allow. Would be a great selling point to when the time comes, along with FSH.

I had the exhaust manifolds replaced on my Vito (also OM642 V6) and it was an engine/gearbox out job ... thought there might be better access in a GL though. The manifolds have a steel liner which can delaminate, dropping shards of metal into the turbo (so I needed a new turbo as well). I've not heard of manifolds cracking (as mentioned by the OP) before.

Id be suprised if its an engine out job. Its doable on a Vito with a 642 engine without taking the engine out. We've done two here.

Do the chain if its rattling on a cold start.

No chain rattle. Been quoted £700 for chain kit from dealers so I've decided to leave it.

I dont know too much about how the repair will be done but I did call another mercedes specialist who also said it would be an engine out job to replace the manifold on the GL
