Should I Sell my C63?

C63 AMG
I currently own a 08 C63 AMG and have had it for 18 months.
Recently i did a track day at Cadwell Park and was very disappointed with the extensive wear on the tyres and brakes. The rate of the wear was so bad i could only manage half the track day. On visiting a Mercedes dealership, the price for the parts to be replaced was £2k.
My friend with an MX5 did the full day with hardly any wear at all.
I know the MX5 weighs significantly less than the C63 AMG but it made me think of selling the C63 AMG and getting a normal everyday car and a car specific for track days, probably an MX5.

Another reason is the expensive parts, servicing and insurance for the C63 AMG.
I have worked out i spend about £8k a year on my C63 AMG and do around 8000 miles a year. This does include everything, insurance, warranty, tax and petrol is included.
If i get two cars i still think it would cost less per year than the C63 AMG. As I've recently turned 25, insurance should be reasonable now.

The thing that worries me though is i feel i may regret selling it and miss its sound and power. I think it's one of the best sounding cars out there and i do like its power, especially after 50mph where it still accelerates hard. I had a Fiesta 1.2 for three weeks when my C63 was being repaired and it was very boring and i missed the C63. However if i get two cars i feel i could live the boredom of the everyday car as i would still have a track car for fun.

The car currently has fewer than 28k miles on it. Mercedes gave me a ballpark figure of £22k if i sold the car to them. I bought it from them 18 months ago for £37k so obviously that trade in figure seems low. I have been looking online and anything below £25k seems low, £25-£27k seems a fair price and over £27k is a good price.

What price do you recommend i should put it up for? Has anyone else got two cars, one being for the track? Sorry for the long post.

Sell it & buy a decent C55AMG and with money to spare fit Coilovers and you're laughing.

I was behind a C63 Estate the other day in my 55 and I kept having to brake as he kept braking round the corners, he took a corner too fast and his rear wheels started smoking, there was no drama in my car, took it flat out.

If you sell it and buy a normal everyday car you will miss it badly!

MX5 is the best value for my track day car. Which is why you see so many of them.

The risk of going from a C63 to a MX5 is that you'll possibly miss the speed. So the compromise solution I found was a VX220.

You can buy a £1k MX5, add roll cage and bucket seats, or buy one already done on Pistonheads for ~£3k.

To be honest.... these cars were never meant as full on track cars... However there are a number of factors to consider for track days..

LSD
18" wheels
Tracking setup
Different Tires

Only you know if you need to sell or not, ask yourself why you have the car and does it justify your expense..... :thumb:

Hmmm Mercedes and excessive rear tyre wear. Ooh I know give Ross Brawn a call he has also been having similar problems over the last two seasons in F1.

What's your take on C32 as a track car guys?

Unless you are a skilled track driver, you're going to struggle to get the 'best' out of a C63 on a track.

For under £5k and for pure fun (and sticking with the Mercedes theme) a 190e 2.3/2.5 Cosworth would be more enjoyable IMO; it's lighter, the engine loves to rev and its got a dogleg gearbox.

Rebellion Automotive RA350D .... Loads of speed for everyday fun and good economy will leave you with money for a fun weekend car... Just saying :)

The C63 is far too heavy for track days. Get an old E30 325i or an AP1 S2000.

MX5 is much too slow for track days in my opinion.

MX5 is just crap for track day.. far too slow. Spend your money on some geometry, track day tyres and driving lessons.

I've seen MX5 lap faster than some AMG cars. I agree though, spending money on lessons is well worthwhile.

Keep the C63 and get a trackday car.

A Westfield/Caterham will slaughter your C63 around any track anyway and you'll have more fun. A set of tyres will last all year as well.

Nothing wrong with an MX-5 for a trackday car - just avoid places like Thruxton.

For around £28k I'd buy this for towing and a bit of fun and this for a trackday.

What about a DC2 Jap spec 99 or 2000 plate?

not cheap but that will give you the buzz needed on and off track
