single wiper

Cost.

Why fit a £500 wiper system when you can fit a £50 one?

Also, reliblity problems etc

...Not wishing to hijack this thread, but whilst I was aware the mechanism was expensive, I wasn't aware that it had "a reliability problem". What problem? and is there anything preventative that can be done to minimise failure?

Even though I have twin wipers it has a similar mechanism to the original, the arm stetches out to wipe the corners of the screen.

On my old 210 I had terrible problems with 'smearing'. No matter how well the screen was cleaned this problem continued to return.

It appeared that this problem was quite common on the single bladed 210 ,and I had the blade and arm replaced under warranty.

Regarding the above comment, I simply do not accept it. The new two blade system still has an 'oval moving' type passenger blade. As per the old 210 it straightens out at the top of its radius and moves straight across the screen for a 'couple' of inches, and then continues the downward arc. (sounds expensive to me, and I have only wrote about it) :)

John

To answer the original question of when MB ditched the panoramic single wiper blade system:

C-Class: on the change over from the W202 to the W203, so I guess that would be 2001 or so.

E-Class: on the change over from the W210 to the W211.

The mechanism can be prone to fail as the running guides lose their lubriaction grease through general old age. The dealer will want to sell you a new one at great cost but there is a fix that can be done which entails taking the mechanism apart, cleaning it, re-greasing the relevant parts and then re-assembly.

When i went to the stealer with a sticking wiper problem on my C180, I was rewarded with an 800 quid bill. :(

I won't do that again in a hurry....

Two wipers will also give a greater 'Swept Area' which some markets may require. Perhaps a mathamatician can work out the difference for 1 or 2 blades.

single wiper fun

The only reason why I like the single wiper is when I use it to clean my windscreen during dry weather and the people in the car next to me at the lights get an enormous fright when all the water gets flipped on to them!!! :bannana: Passengers also get amused by this unfamiliar type of single wiper action and ask where is the other one? Is it stuck? :D

Pretty much why I like mine so much.

...the single wiper mechanism used to be one of the things that really differentiated Mercs from the opposition. I still think that they are really neat, and are a visual display of german engineering excellence (even if it does cost £800 to replace). I think that I shall be looking at mine once a year to check its all greased up.

Don't the dual wipers sweep at a slightly less annoying slower speed for normal wipes? Don't 2 wipers look better?

Actually they are quicker slightly because it has to traverse the whole window instead of half.

And no, IMHO, the single blade looks MUCH better.

I have yet to ride in a car where the two wiper system does not squeek or chatter accross the screen, even in a new car :( . I think it may be a regressive step changing to a two wiper system.

The single wiper looks much nicer than dual wipers. I had dual wipers on a ford escort, I have a single wiper on a merc. Makes it special.

Also its a 12 year old mechanism that still works perfectly and quietly. On dual wiper cars I've always heard a little thud as the blades change direction. Listening to that for 3 hours on the M4 gets a little trying.

The two wiper system is superior over the single blade.

Both our 202's and 210's had terrible problems with smearing which has been virtually non existant in the 2o3 and 211 that replaced those cars.

yes , i do miss firing the screenwash onto other cars , but they seem better overall.

The panoramic wiper is one example of MB`s insistance of making things more complicated and expensive than need be and ending up with a something that is no better!
My wiper is a pain in the ***e-allways smeary.
Looks cool though,wouldnt change it....

Totally agree with the 'smearing' issue. The new 211 wiper (touch wood) are extremely quiet, although I have heard of problems being caused by 'wax' on the windscreen causing the blade to 'judder'.

Regarding single wipers, if memory serves me correctly didn't the old Citreon CX vehicles have a similar set-up?

The 211 wipers also cater for right hand drive cars with the blade getting right up to the top right corner, the single bladed 210 obviously could not.
This is not a big issue, but an improvement none the less.

John
