Car
2018 GLC 220d AMG line Premium + 1989 500SL Now sold, replaced with 2007 Aston Martin DB9
I think its time to changed the tyres on the SL.

The car is fitted with Mixchelin MXV 205/65/15V.

The fronts are not too bad, but the rears looking like they are pretty old, and the side walls are starting to crack.

But I think I will change all four tyres.

The car only does 3000 miles a year, so long life wear isnt a problem.

So Im looking for tyres that will give the car a comfortable ride, with goodish grip, and at a reasonable cost.

Also thought about widening the tyres to 225

Any ideas what tyres I should fit.

Any ideas please, or do I leave myself at the mercy of Quikfit for advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The current tyres Michelin recommends for an SL is the Pilot Primacy. For the 1989 SL500 they don't list the size of tyre you quote.

If you just fit wider tyres, you will affect your speedo reading. You will also need to make sure there is sufficient clearance in the front wheel arches when on full lock.

For 3000 miles per year I would not have thought it worth making changes in tyre sizes.

QwikFit ..... Noooo !
In my opinion, you should stick with the tyre dimensions that MB reccommend.
Something like a Toyo is a good ' middle ground ' tyre,. If you wanna spend a bit more, then I'd look at something like a yokohama avs / dunlop sp sport / goodyear eagle

They could well be quoting for the 129 chassis, which normally runs on 225/55R16's. 1989 was the changeover year between the 107 and 129.

Mine is one of the very last 107s.
That is my car in the avatar picture.

how's about looking on blackcircles.com to see what's available in your size.
I don't know where your based, but I hear that
http://www.micheldever.co.uk/ are very good.

(I have no personal experience of them, just based on hear say from Scoobynet)

Hi, I would highly recommend Pirelli - P-Zero Assimetrico N3's
tyre.detail1.6.290.jpg

I've got them on my CLK and the grip is unbelieveable in both wet and dry weather!!
There is next to no road noise, even with the roof down.

good grip

That is good to know because I have bridgestone potenza re05 on my clk 320 and the traction conrol kicks in at least twice a day and I aint no speed freak.

Does your traction control kick in as well.

It was on quite a bit with my previous continentals but now it only comes on when I take off a bit faster than normal:devil:

I've got a fair bit more confidence in the wet with the N3's now!

try dunlop sp9000

or michelen

stick with a good brand and dont go for any cheap tyres.

I'd tend to avoid Kwikfit, National, etc as they never give me the right price on the tyres to begin with - charging me the highest price they can get away with. (that's business I suppose) They generally have a price match, but it's the ethics.

I always use http://www.protyre.co.uk (Slough) for my tyres as they give an upfront honest low price (but don't discount, as they are giving the their lowest price).

Their prices are similar or cheaper than etyres.co.uk, mytyres.co.uk and blackcircles.com I find (if you include the fitting).

They also offer a great service, a 'tie and shirt' guy drives your car into the bay, not a boilersuit guy with grubby hands who could dirty the car... and the tie and shirt buy looks after you. Refreshing they hand torque up the wheel nuts using a torque wrench rather than tighten up all the way with their machine drills.

They can also properly balance the wheels on the inside rim of the alloy wheel. No trips back to get a slight vibration sorted. Unlike some other place I used in the past, two trips back and technically challanged to mount balance the weights on the inside rim. (I can't believe brand new BMWs have their alloys balanced with clips on the outer rim).

They're honest too. Some other outfit said I needed a new exhaust, and I took it to Protyre and they said I didn't and it was perfectly fine. I feel like muggings now, since in the old days when I did use Kwikfit type places they always recommended that I'm gonna need a *complete* new exhaust.
