from a colleague on another forum:-

My 1993 charcoal grey/black Mercedes 500sl was stolen at the weekend in Canonmills area of Edinburgh. It has distinctive 6 spoke 17inch alloys, matching hardtop and it is LEFT HAND DRIVE with BELGIAN number plate 4438E

Any information you have which results in the return (awkward questions asked :- ) ) of my car will get a £500 reward

It is a car that we have had in the family for a long time and it is quite rare in Edinburgh to see these cars about.

Sorry for your friend's problems, but he should be warned that in England the Theft Act 1968 @ section 23 says -

23. Advertising rewards for return of goods stolen or lost
Where any public advertisement of a reward for the return of any goods which have beenstolen or lost uses any words to the effect that no questions will be asked, or that the personproducing the goods will be safe from apprehension or inquiry, or that any money paid for the purchase of the goods or advances by way of a loan on them will be repaid, the person advertising the reward and any person who prints or publishes the advertisement shall on summary conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding one hundred pounds.

It's not so much the fine, as the conviction which is to be avoided.

It may be that the law on this matter is different in Scotland - I'm no expert.

Can I suggest you edit the post above by removing the no q's asked?

[Of course, ignorance of the law is a defence only if you are raising money for the Labour Party.]

I wish your colleague all good luck in getting the car back.

Why put that many miles on it? It could have been driven to Rosyth (about 10 miles from Edinburgh) and be on a ferry to Zeebrugge from there... ;)
the thief will have to try it out and flash a few cameras first:rolleyes:

is that red on white plates then. easy to spot if it is still hanging around.

Thanks for the comments guys - hope it turns up (but - to be honest - I think its in Uzbekistan by now)

Maybe, though for some reason nearly every Scottish car I've looked at has the tax disc there. I thought that was illegal anyway.
