I have a SL320 1998 and there are 2 switches on the main facia vents, one red and one blue. Can anybody please tell me what these are for. Thank you.

They control the "temperature" of the air coming through the centre vents.

The blue one provides cold air through, the red one warmer air. Cannot remember if the red setting provides it at the same temp as the rest of the system or not, as I only ever really use the blue setting.

From Page 29 Owner's manual

Switch 11 (top one)
"when pressed = temperature controlled air."

Switch 12 (bottom one)
"when pressed = unheated air in heating mode or cooled in cooling mode"

Make of that what you will!!

Yup, a bit confusing! I normally have neither selected, I put the blue one on if the car is being heated (cold day) but I want cool air blowing on my face.
