Does anyone have any recommendations regarding replacement of the cats on my R129 2000 SL320. I appreciate genuine parts are probably best but the price is a little steep. I didn't know if anyone has fitted aftermarket ones which were still a good fit? :)

Not an MB but I replaced a blocked cat on an Audi A4 1.8T with an aftermarket one from ecp and it fitted fine.

Aftermarket cats don't generally last. Massive difference between factory and those cheap Chinese ones sold by the factors.

I would look at the sports cat market. Some are very well made and fraction of mb price.

Just have your local muffler shop weld in a pair of quality aftermarket cats. Magnaflow should be good enough if they sell them in the UK.

Sorry some how ended up with two different threads on this, a local exhaust specialist has said it's not my cats breaking up but my silencers. they can make me a system up from the secondary cats back in stainless steel for £750. Are there any other options out there than the main dealers, possibly thinking the stainless option may be best in the long run but pennies are tight so open to suggestions? :)

If you want to spend lots of money then go to the dealer and get the OEM exhaust parts; otherwise for less pennies then go to an exhaust specialist who can modify your system and throw in a potential performance upgrade at the same time:thumb:

Cant see much of a performance upgrade while maintaining the factory cat's but still a better option than OEM.. full cat back in stainless with lifetime warranty what's not to like (and with tailpipes to your liking)

Tony.

So a quick update, not having been able to drive my car for a couple of months due to an operation on my shoulder having just got back in it the rattle has taken on pneumatic drill proportions, very embarrassing!

It appears the front cat on the left hand side is breaking up and will possibly soon block the secondary cat. so I need to do something sharpish.

The silencers look as I they have quite a bit of life left in them so my options are just replace the left hand pipe with the two cats in it with a genuine MB part, replace both LH & RH with genuine MB parts or replace the whole system with a stainless system but with only two mains cats at the front?

The original parts are £537+VAT each (£1288 the pair inc. VAT) and quite likely if one side is going the other may not be far behind, a stainless exhaust is £1400. Given the originals have lasted 16 years, which if repeated is likely to outlast my ownership of it, is original going to be better or should I go for the stainless from what is a well respected company? :)
