Does anyone know whether you can change the "leak oil return line" on the front shock aborber (SL500 1997 with ASD). It's a small black plastic pipe that exits at the top of the strut and connects to a rigid pipe on the inner wing which in turns feeds back to the level control value unit. Mine is damaged and is leaking oil. At the strut end it looks like it's just a push on fit, the other end it's a standard pipe fitting.

When the engine isn't running there's no pressure in the pipe (no leaking oil) so I it should be safe to change. New one is ordered (£10), but I'm not convinced it'll be as easy as it looks to change. Does anyone out there know any different?

I have had both rear shocks and spheres changed on my SL600 with ADS. When we did the shocks we undid the banjo joints very slowly to release the pressure and as we did the car lowered itself on the suspension. After changing the shocks out we topped up the hydraulic fluid and started the car up. The system is self bleeding and the car soon came back up to the correct level.

I guess if you are careful and undo the joints slowly and listen for any hissing you should be ok.

If you need to top up the fluid make sure you use genuine MB stuff, it's about £11 for a litre.
