Have spoken at length to a great guy I know who knows cars inside out
His view is that the SL55 AMG is a great car but as I know my SL500 and have spent a few pounds bringing it to top class again , to spend £14000 on the upgrade to an SL55 + the "unknown " issues would be foolhardy ( his opinion)
My car has a very high spec but clearly worth less than the 55
I tend to agree despite the fun of the speed etc

One other point to note...
Your SL500 is going to continue to go down in value.
The SL55 P30 cars are going up in value.

But it would involve spending
Either £30k to buy and store
Or spend £13000 to buy over the SL500 value and budget for £3000 to tweak to my satisfaction
By that I mean
- full service
- upgrade the COMAND
- probably refurb all 4 alloys
So I'm £16000 down for what? A faster version
The cars are exactly the same spec. Colour, interior etc . Engine not !
Seemed a great idea .....

It's not the money as such
It's value for money - will I have that much more fun ?
For the hardcore experience I have the GT3
For the softer easy ride in comfort with pace ( which the 500 has) it's the SL
I need therapy !!!

I know what you mean as have been faced with similar decisions. I bought an R129 SL500 to replace my SL60 and is a lovely example with cracking VFM. However I am looking to find an SL60 again as the SL500 isn't quite the same. Can't quite put my finger on it as is it £10k better than my SL500 to drive? Probably not but I still want the SL60! Most times I have ever compromised & put my money/sensible head on I have not regretted it as such but knew it wasn't the right decision.

Reading between your posts I think you're saying that you've found two perfect cars for you. A GT3 for hardcore full-on sports car experience with almost zero depreciation, and an SL500 for a less-extreme grand touring sports car experience with almost zer depreciation.
I think anything else you consider will end up being compared to one or the other, and as it will involve spending more money and probably result in depreciation it will seem very expensive and do nothing different to what you have.
