As some of you may know I had an SL60 a few year back and regrettably decided to sell. I have been looking to get back into one again but have really struggled to find anything other than silly prospectively priced stuff coming onto the market. None or very few that seemed to have sold.

The idea was to replace the very nice T/1999 SL500 that I have with an SL60. However I am struggling to see the value in the SL60's at over twice the price of my SL500. An SL60 isn't over twice as good or in some cases 4 or 5 times better than my SL500 IMHO.

Came across this one and have had some dialogue with the dealer. Anyone know this one or anything about it by chance?
1996 Mercedes-Benz SL 60 Amg Sl60 Amg £36,995

I could be wrong but am guessing it is on SOR. It has been up for sale for a while at price moved a smidge from £40k to £37k.

I spoke to the guy at Silver Arrows about his £50k one! However the car is quite well known and doesn't seem such a great example. Certainly not for £50k. It is £50k....did I mention that! Also the guy wasn't great to talk to and I wouldn't want to deal with him or give him my cash. In a short initial conversation he treated me lilke an idiot and just carried on talking over me and talking. It has been for sale prospectively for a year or so. I never contacted him back.

Another came onto the market at £65k! Yes £65k!! I know it is low mileage and owners but £65k. Another that is not selling. I have seen a few SL60's come onto the market over the last few years and most seemingly are just not selling as the prices are silly.

It doesn't even seem that £65k gets you a warm bottom as looks like there are no heated seats from what I can see.

Does anyone else see these SL60's a little over priced or overvalued? Anyone know of any that have sold recently and for how much?

I have had both and don't see an SL60 as that much different or better than an SL500. Although rarer not twice, thrice and more the price of a decent SL500

Interesting thread. You are absolutely right to ask if anyone knows of vehicles actually being sold recently.

Advertising rare cars for high prices is fun - especially for the advertising firms - but is no indication of actual prices sold, especially in this "Quantitative Easing" fuelled market where people are "parking" their money in an interesting car rather than investing it in other assets.

It will probably appreciate for it's collectable factor. If you want something that's 4 times better, get an SL55.

Indeed. A car can be advertised for any amount but the real useful info is what they sold for. You can always ask....doesnt mean you will always get [emoji6]

Not sure it will appreciate any more this side of 10 years. There are just so many others cars in the current market with better appreciable value IMHO. The SL55 indeed being one.

I've had both and the SL60 isn't 4 times better than an SL500. By the same token an SL55 isn't 4 times better than an SL60. An SL55 certainly is much better VFM at the moment.

The SL55 may be better VFM, but it certainly doesn't have the rarity, and it is FAR more likely to have been driven aggressively by it's former owners.

TBH it's extremely unlikely that the SL60 will have been stressed by its earlier owners, and I suggest that it's more likely to have been carefully stored and maintained.

The price of some 'collectable' cars is getting silly and like before will end in tears for someone who buys at the wrong time. Its a gamble which I wouldn't take and that is coming from someone who gambles a fortune on FTSE 100 company shares. Myself I'd buy that rather nice SL65 Pace car edition on e-bay although I'd make a silly offer just in the hope they might bite but I have far too many cars and motorbikes to warrant yet another car purchase.

Wish I bought that 1973 MGB GT V8 when I saw it back in the 1980s for £3,500, I owned a standard 1973 version at the time and I thought it wasn't worth 4x mine even though I hankered for the V8.

How wrong was I.

I can confirm the SL60 brakes are not that great after the nearly caught fire while stopping quickly alongside a DB9 & 430 one year! Of course I never drove the SL60 aggressively on any occasion.

I'd agree with this & can't afford to be the one losing my shirt or holding the baby if these silly prices ease south. The market is very inflated in lots of areas. Not dissimilar to the housing market really though. None of these bubbles have burst yet......yet!

I meant to say that the SL55 is 4 times better than an R129 SL55, I currently have both, a 66000 mile 05 SL55 and a 67000 mile 98 SL500 (M119 motor). I enjoy them both, but the R230 is better in so many ways that it's clear that there was a 10 year development gap between the two.
I've never owned an SL60 so I can't compare, I try to shy away from pre and early merger AMG cars out of concerns for AMG specific part support. Prices are for them going up like gangbusters here in the US with people advertising SL73's for ~$200k.

R129's are fantastic because they're such bargains. If I had a spare $200k to spend on a car, it would probably be Italian with a name ending with 'i'. If I had to park a car with a suitcase full of money in a council estate, the R129 would be my choice.

Of course there was an SL55 version of the R129, but those are very rare indeed.

The brakes are shared with the SL600, IIRC?

Yup stock SL600 brakes on the SL60. Better than the SL500 but not that much! Cost effective to replace though as a bonus.

The 320mm brakes are also found on some 500s. They definitely wave the white flag when worked hard.

the sl60 market is nuts at the moment and I do agree they are over valued although the issue is that the only alternative is a same vintage 911... and basic ones are min 35k and likely 75k or more... and if you look at limited special edition 911s then you know what Im talking about as 964rs or 993RS or even turbos are £250k... So although i agree the Sl60 is over valued, in comparison to other iconic cars of the same vintage its much cheaper.
I think the market will have a blip I just dont know when. The other issue is the limited supply which means will any of those owners need to sell when things get messy ...
I wouldnt pay £50k for one which is why i jumped to buy my blue one 2.5 yrs ago.

For that money you can get an SL63 which will go and stop better. Not that I am biased! Seems silly money for a car of that age and mileage.

Same goes for the 911s, much rather have an SL63 or better still SL65.
