Sl60

Rockits - Why dont you go and have a look at it... If its got the AMG control unit that Talbir mentions, its the AMG engine.
I wouldnt trust AMG's records really, this is just before the merger and they arent really interested in pre merger cars anymore.

This could be a bargain.

Setanta...have you driven that exact car I am looking at then or just saying you have driven an SL60? If you did drive this exact one when was this and did you go to look to buy it or something?

That exact car and last week. I went to look with the view to buying (6 hour rounds trips in my gaz guzzler are not undertaken just to have a look :D)

I have since seen another one too (much much more expensive - interesting it had some body trim the Lennox one did not and vice versa and both looked identical under the engine bay) but having had two of the R129's and four of the 5 litre V8's (coupe and sedan) I think I have done the 'mid 90's' thing and so am beginning to work my way through the post 2000 cars, hence the biturbo/kompressor option.

If the seller was in London that car would be gone in a second - I think the distance out there may put people off.

I don't profess to know whether it is an SL60 (given all the comments above) but it is stupidly quick and feels a lot more torqy (sp?) than the other cars that I have owned. The engine note is...well...

I came this close *holds fingers apart by a fraction* to buying it this week but it falls back within the same category as my last SL - not practical with a baby seat. But a CL600 or CL55 would suffice. That being said, it is gnawing away at the back of my mind.....

To my mind, he has priced it very fairly and I would have offered a bit less just to address some cosmetic issues.

So there you have it - assuming this is an SL60, and if you want an SL60 for peanuts, then I can't see any reason why you would not buy it.

As Jay said, go and see it - some lovely roads around there too.

Thanks Jay & Setanta. I will arrange to go and and see it as soon as I can get the time so will let you know what transpires. My trip is a 6 hour round trip from Potters Bar in my SL500 so again not taken lightly!

I am happy with my SL500 but intend to keep it for 5-10 years so don't want to have a situation that I would always be regretting not having the SL60. I might drive the SL60 and prefer my SL500 anyway but from what people have said the SL60 is an entirely different car and better for it.

I will reserve my judgement until I have seen it and driven it.

take a 5mm allen key and open the 4 bolts holding down the engine management storage unit lid - there you will fine the modules for throttle control (EGAS), ASR/ABS and the all important LH module...this LH module will have a part no beginning with HWA if it is the almighty 6.0 M119 engined car.

Thanks talbir...much appreciated...I will take my growing toolkit in the boot.

talbir...my specialist went to inspect the car this afternoon for me and the car doesn't have the ezl module with the HWA part number you mentioned. I am told that EZL is old technology and doesn't apply to this 1997 car but possibly on the older models.

The other 1997 SL60 that I saw did not have the HWA numbers either...and that was definitely an SL60 (paperwork from new from MBUK)

Rockits - at the rate you're going, by the time you make a decision on this car the world will have run out of oil and Stats007 vs W124 will have escalated into WW3.

Get on with it man!!!!!

I've had 2 SL60s and an SL500.
Drive your 500 up there, and drive the bloody thing. If it is an SL60 I GUARANTEE you will know from how it drives.

Cheers Nick....thanks for the gentle nudge;)

I am going up there tomorrow morning in my SL500 to drive the thing and give it a good going over. Oliver @ Presitge completed a full inspection for me this afternoon. There are fair few things wrong with it but nothing major it seems and all should be resonably straight forward to deal with.

Will either buy it tomorrow or not as it would be nice to put an end to it one way or another. I used to make decisions too easy a few years ago in my youth but have to think a bit harder these days.

Thanks Setanta.....did you see the Charles Ironside one or the one in Crawley? Are you now off the idea of a SL60 then?

No, did not see them and would not bother (myself). My preference is always a private seller. The other one has not been advertised but it is a lot more expensive than the Lennox one.

Just weighing it up at the moment but hard to get over the sheer amount of horsepower that can obtained from the kompressor/biturbo.

There will be a few items in the engine bay marked with the HWA number, unless AMG had nothing to do with it.

Thanks everyone's help. I had the car inspected by a MB specialist on Saturday and went to see it myself on Sunday. The engine number does check out OK with a 99 in it as suggested by Bjorn from Sweden on the Benzworld firum. The car was in good genuine shape. A few issues but nothing major and we did a deal so I am now the proud owner of an SL60 AMG.

Therefore I now have my SL500 to sell if anyone is interested!

Have fun and enjoy!

Lots of pictures please once you collect it :) ;)

hallelujah!:D

Well chuffed for you.

Looking forward to pics and a review

Thanks all. Over the moon with it. Chiefski....if you thought it was a bargain at £10995 then I got a double bargain! Can't tell you what I paid as I would have to k*ll you!

Won't be using it for a week or so as want to concentrate on getting a few bits done on the SL500 first before putting it up for sale for £7495. If there any interested parties for the SL500 just let me know!

Thanks Stats. Thanks for everyone's help, advice and input on this one. Wouldn't have been able to do it without you all. I will be keeping this little beauty for some time.
