SL600 - words of wisdom welcome

Really weird and probably slightly contentious.....I love the M119 5.0 engine and had many a fun journey in my 500E, but the thing that always disappointed me about the 5.0 V8 was the lack of V8 noise it produced...anybody else find this or is it just me...if so, I'll just get my coat!

That's what I thought till I took the cats off......:D

Of course, that's why lots of us have made minor exhaust mods. like removing the centre muffler. It's all down to over-enthusiastic silencing by M-B.

So you don't think you need to keep the revs up?

Nope, in nfact i would say that your comment applies for a V8. The V12 has the low down torque of a diesel with the top end power of a petrol.

I drove a V12 back to back with a SL60, the V12 has alot more usable power.

Yep, no note of a burble at all. I fitted a Remus box to my SL M119 and it was still muted.

I think the M117 are worse though, especially in the W126. Makes you think theres an I6 under the hood. I have built a custom stainless steel system on mine, with a balance box at the front and a tiny silencer on each side at the back. Even still it not obtrusive and it just about burbles. Thinking about removing the balance box next and have a custon X pipe.

I agree with Nav, but then I would always still have a V8 for its characteristics... the V12's just have an air of "sewing machine" to them... i.e. no soul, just does what its supposed to silently..

Sound more like my Dyson hover! I remeber first driving a V12, came to a set of traffic lights and i thought the engine had died! Sheer silence with no lumpiness on idle

Until you come to a corner - then the extra 100kgs over the front wheels shows it's effect.

I never really noticed it to be honest, ADS helps significantly but in all honesty the R129 isn't the best chassis for twisty roads so i never pushed any of my SLs that hard through bends.

I remember the cornering the best bit if you were committed! Brake fade was bad on the first SL I had though.

I had plenty of the first gen R129s, they didn't feel as nimble as the facelift ones through bends for some reason. Probably the reason why i didn't notice the weight of the V12!
