Dear all,

I've my W123 a few weeks now and am totally in love with her!

She's completely changed my driving style, now I'm just happy to cruise to
Where ever I need to be! No rushing for me! This might have something to do
With the fuel economy as well as the relaxing driving style my 280ce coupe
Lends it's self too.

The last couple of days I have noticed a slight rattle when I change the automatic gear leaver! Has anybody else encountered this before? I thought it might be the selector rod slacking off? Can anybody give any advice via experience? Everything seems in order for the moment just hearing that slight
Rattle is a bit unnerving!!!

Best,

calvinius

No the stick still feels firm, just when the windows are down & I change gear I hear a rattle that's of a higher pitch!

Is this car a manual or auto? And why the windows down reference?

When changing (auto) if the windows are down I can hear the rattle!

If windows are up I cannot hear it!

Whether it helps to tell you this I know not, but when I had my W123 I had a rattle that was hard to locate. Sounded to my ear like the brakes - a rattling pad - and it was. But not from the end of the car it appeared to be coming from! Sound travels in mysterious ways in a W123....
From memory it just rattled as I drove, but not when the brakes were applied.
It never hurts to check brakes - might be worth a look. (A light metallic rattling was what mine was emitting).
Anyway, it's a W123. It wont fail without a sound louder than a sonic boom. Rattles, pah...

If you mean the sound only manifests itself when moving the lever, for example from P to D, perhaps one of the gear shift linkage bushes has failed or is failing. If memory serves my right there are 5 of them, 2 under the car.

I've not had a W123 for a few years now, but mine suffered a similar problem after having a re-conditioned 'box fitted.
